About Coombe Dean School

“Success built around positive relationships" - R Woodland, Headteacher

Coombe Dean School Description

Coombe Dean is a six form entry comprehensive school on the south eastern edge of Plymouth. Designated an ‘Outstanding’ school by Ofsted in 2009, and again in 2012, our professional mission is to ensure that whenever external audit asks the question, we are able to confidently and convincingly point to the excellence of our arrangements to support young people.

The quality of that support manifests itself in the academic progress and achievement of our students. In 2013 our students’ attainment in the key benchmark indicator of 5 + A* – C GCSE grades including English and Maths was 67% . This followed our record breaking year in 2012 which saw our students achieve 71% . Levels of Progress for the Core Subjects comfortably exceed national averages. Our specialisms of Maths and ICT are designed to support students in embracing numeracy and manipulation of the microchip; two essential skills for the workforce of tomorrow.

We seek to promote among all our students experiences and opportunities that will equip them with the skills, insights and attitudes necessary to develop into active and responsible citizens of the 21st century. A wealth of learning opportunities enrich the curriculum in and outside of the classroom. As educators we know that students learn best when they are interested and engaged; it is a challenge we readily accept to make learning fun and relevant at the same time.

Excellent relationships characterise Coombe Dean. Students enjoy coming to school and take considerable pride in being a member of the Coombe Dean community. Staff enjoy working at Coombe Dean, united in a shared sense of mission and empowered by devolved responsibility and professional development. Parents are appreciative of the quality of communication with home and partnership working. Governors serve as a loyal but critical friend, holding the school to account in positive and constructive ways. All work together to make Coombe Dean the exceptional learning community that we are.

On Saturday 15th June, both Lucy W & Talie A-L helped make-up a crew of seven on a yacht from Horizons Plymouth Sailing Club. They took part in the Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit - a 26 mile round trip from the Mountbatten breakwater to the Eddystone Lighthouse and back again. The sailing conditions provided good wind speed, but the direction made the outbound leg quite difficult...
