Skin-to-skin contact directly after birth helps babies to adjust to life outside the womb and is really important for supporting mothers to initiate breastfeeding and to develop a close, loving relationship with their baby. When a mother holds her baby in skin to skin contact for the first time after birth it initiates a surge of maternal hormones when sh...e smells, touches and engages with her baby. Babies’ instincts after birth drive them to follow a unique process, which if left uninterrupted will result in them having their first breastfeed ❤️ At cossham skin-to-skin contact is actively encouraged for at least an hour after birth, this can be with either mums or birth partners. I have been so lucky to have water births with all three of my children, two at Cossham but this one is memorable as my husband nearly didn’t make it in time of the birth! The midwives were wonderful at keeping me company... and kept me updated with my husband’s progress in getting to the hospital. We had surprise pregnancies, and I loved that I was able to find out myself what we had rather than someone telling me. We also loved the time afterwards, it was so nice to relax and enjoy time with our newborn without feeling the pressure of having to leave. She joined the Good Quads on a visit to Southmead Hospital 70 years after they were born here. When they arrived in 1948 they were the first surviving quads born by caesarean and caused quite a stir with the media of the time. 🎙️📰🎥

We welcomed our little girl Maia Emilia into the world in this fantastic birth centre on 30/11/17. I have the best memories that will stay with me forever. From the moment we got there I felt relaxed and looked after. Our midwife Emily was a star, she made me feel at ease and gave me so much calming support the whole way through. Nothing is too much trouble and I would highly recommend Cossham to anyone for an amazing experience every woman should be able to have. Thank you to all the lovely staff at Cossham who really do go the extra mile to make sure you feel comfortable, looked after and make you feel like an individual. This is a very special birth centre and I'm so pleased I chose Cossham, best decision ever � x

We had wonderful experience at Cossham Birth Centre. The staff were all so kind, supportive and reassuring. The atmosphere was calm and it was so lovely to both be able to snuggle up in the double bed with our baby after he was born. I would highly recommend Cossham to expectant parents and can't thank the staff there enough for helping us to have such a positive and calm birth. Thank you!

We had our second son Stanley at Cossham Birth Centre last Friday. Everything from the support and guidance we received by phone whilst labouring at home to the personable, kind care that we were welcomed with the minute we walked through the door was fantastic.

We were gifted with an amazing midwife Jen who guided us through an empowering and controlled labour resulting in the most perfect water birth which I had always wanted!

Myself, partner and Stanley would like to thank all the staff at Cossham for giving us an amazing experience that we will never forget. A special thank you to Jen for all your support and encouragement but mostly for delivering our gorgeous little boy safely into the world.

We couldn't recommend Cossham Birth Centre enough and will be spreading the word to all we know.

We had a great experience at Cossham, all the staff were absolutely amazing and so supportive especially Harriet who was with us from start to finish! We eventually ended up having to go to Southmead as our little lady wouldn’t come out without a some assistance! Although this was not part of our plan Harriet came with us up to Southmead! It was so nice that she stayed with us until the end, she was so lovely and encouraging. We had lots of laughs and the whole atmosphere felt really relaxed. They made a little tear and out she came! We really couldn’t have asked for a better labour experience. Elfie Dandelion Jenkins was born at 20.04 on 22/3. Thank you all the staff at Cossham- especially Harriet who was incredible. �

We didn’t plan on having our baby in Cossham but we’re delighted that we did! The midwives were absolutely fantastic all the way through. We felt extremely lucky that our son started his life in this birthing centre. We received excellent after care and the midwives helped us with breastfeeding until we were confident we had cracked it! My husband could stay with me all through the day and night and we were under no pressure to go home until we were all ready. The room was lovely, almost like a hotel!

Thank you for making the experience of labour and delivery so positive. Highly recommend.

Thankyou so much to the midwives at Cosham!! I gave birth to my baby girl Alana on 27th November last year.

The whole the experience from the first call and check up with Clare in the morning (where we were given aromatherapy oils to go home with), to the birth later on with Kate, was better than I could ever have hoped for.

Kate was brilliant throughout the birth, present and reassuring enough to give me total confidence in what was happening but allowing me and my partner to go through it together to the point where sometimes it felt like it was just the two of us (in a good way!!). We stayed for an extra night to get the hang of breastfeeding and were made to feel so welcome by all of the midwives there. Nothing was too much trouble, we had our own lovely room throughout and it was amazing to be able to have people visit without strict visiting hours.

Thanks so much to all of you, we are so lucky to have a facility like this and I wouldn't think twice about choosing Cosham again xx

Thank you, thank you and thank you again for giving me the 2 most amazing births I could ever ask for. I went to cossham nearly 4 years ago with my first son and my experience was such a positive one. I so desperately wanted to birth in the water which I was able to do but then to be able to stay in till I felt ready to go and to have my husband there throughout was amazing not to mention the fact that all the rooms are ensuite. A small thing but after just giving birth a very important thing. The midwives were amazing so supportive of what I wanted and after having a truly rubbish 2nd pregnancy all I wanted was to be able to birth here again. My little one made me wait but 13 days over and I went into labor. A special mention to Bev from Southmead as had it not been for the very kind generosity of her coming to cossham I would not have been able to go due to sickness. But I did get there and the wonderful Clare was there to support me through it all. On hand with back massages and essential oils a relaxed atmosphere and of course the wonderful pool (Clare your healing hands and encouraging words did the trick and pushed me into the final stages of labor) again the care and attention we received after the birth was second to non. Thank you Vicky and Beth for getting us ready to head home and welcoming us back with open arms on day 2 after quite a struggle. The care and support I have received from these midwives to facilitate the birth and beyond that I so desired was met and went far beyond my expectations. If you would like to have as natural a birth as you can then don't hesitate and go to cossham. I have been so incredibly lucky too of had 2 wonderful births here so to everyone at Cossham and to the supporting team at Southmead. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making that happen. To have an amazing room with everything you need throughout your stay and a relaxed ‘make yourself at home’ approach it felt so comfortable. One of the best bits was having Scott stay with me throughout the night after the birth, exhaustion had set in and having him there to help through the night was wonderful and a family bonding time that is so special.

Special thanks to Deborah for looking after me during the birth. Beth, Emily (student Midwife) and Harriet for looking after me in the early stages, Emily and Claire who looked after me and helped with breastfeeding tips and support, and everyone else for making us feel so welcome and comfortable.

So forgot to post this on 4 February 2017 my daughter (ANASTAZJA )was born at Cossham Birth centre in lavender room!!! I couldn't have asked for the most amazing lotus birth and Experience of this centre - which might I add I would love to experience again!!!! But here she is today! A cheeky one year old who is growing into a beautiful little girl!!! Thank you again!!! Would highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone !! You are all amazing with what you do xxxxxxxx

Just over a year ago my little girl came into the world at cossham on one of the busiest weekends in the bristol birth centres and I can't fault the outstanding support we received. My labour was long but my birth was everything I hoped for thanks to the amazing encouragement and wisdom of Helen and Eloise who were the most wonderful midwives - even after being on shift for 12 hours! I had my third Cossham baby on Sunday night! Cannot recommend Cossham enough, and I have been doing so since my eldest was born there in 2013.

The midwives were amazing everytime, I love how hands off it is, you are free to do it how you want to, while they are there supporting you. Our midwife Clare was lovely Sunday night, and couldn't do enough for us during and after the birth. I also love how my husband is allowed to stay overnight, and the large rooms are calming and comfortable.

If only I was allowed a fourth baby... I'd definitely be back, no question!

I had my son there on Sunday and could not fault it at all. It was a great experience having my son in the birthing pool. I loved how the midwife' s Helen and claire stayed with me the whole time giving me encouragement when I needed it and making me feel i could trust my body and go with what it was telling me too do. Also a psin relief free birth. I would definitely recommend Cossham birth centre to anyone expecting a child.

I gave birth to my little girl at Cossham on 10/08/2017. All through my pregnancy I wanted to birth at Cossham and I'm so grateful I got the opportunity. This was my first birth and it was most definitely a memorable one for all the right reasons. The whole experience was super chilled and contained the right amount of monitoring along with plenty of personal space for my husband and I to experience this special time together. Nothing was too much trouble and even though I'm Gluten Free they made sure there was food for me after the birth. They even offered to get food delivered in for my husband in the early hours of the morning! I can't recommend Cossham enough and if I'm ever lucky enough to be expecting again I would definitely return � thank you all for everything you did.

I gave birth to my 3rd beautiful little girl at Cosham last Thursday 14/12/17, without doubt I would recommend Cosham birth centre it was just an amazing experience. The midwives are wonderful they put you completely at ease, they just listen and trust in your body to do what it’s made to do. The aftercare is exceptional we had time to bond as a family, there was no rush to get me home and with regards to breast feeding I do struggle but with their support I did really well, I must have pressed the buzzer more times then I can remember for help but they were so patient. Thank you so much, you were all wonderful and I will be eternally grateful for the experience I had.

I have always been scared of child birth but when i went to visit Cossham, i Knew it was the place for me to have my baby. As i walked in the centre, i was welcomed by lovely midwives and the rooms felt homely, spacious, clean and proffesional without that clinical feeling.

My birth went very well and I believe this was due to Cossham giving me all the tools I needed for child birth. The birthing ball was amazing and the pool was fantastic. Being weightless made it easy to rest between contractions and easy to move positions as I needed to. It felt like a great form of pain relief.

The midwife Clare who was with me throughout gave me all the encouragment I needed and guided me to try positions to move the labour forwards in the most comfortable way. I felt in very good ands and trusted her to get me through.

The after care was also brilliant, my son was finding it hard to latch on to the brest and the midwives gave me lots of support and time to repeatedly show me how to do this.

I cant thank the cossham team/family enough and I hope this service will thrive for many years to come x

After missing out on being able to birth my 1st child at Cossham I was really hopeful to deliver my second there and after 4 years it lived up to all my expectations. The midwives are incredible: being "hands off" enough to be empowering, making you feel like they trust you and your body to do the job, but also knowing when to give you a bit of attention and encouragement. I was ready to make the most of all the amazing birthing aids but in the end I only just had time to pop baby out in the pool. Being able to have my husband with me until it was time to leave the next day was just wonderful too, it was just an extra element to make the whole experience feel more relaxed and supportive.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Cossham to anyone considering giving birth there, it really is a special place.

20 weeks ago today 15/12 I gave birth to my 3rd baby unexpectedly at cossham, I had spent all night labouring at southmead but unfortunately I wasn’t dilating so was sent home, thankfully for me cossham is only 2 mins up the road from where I live because I knew I would never of made it bk to southmead without delivering, I can’t thank the midwife (Becky) and midwife assistant (jo) enough for taking me in and and delivering my beautiful little girl! I had the most amazing experience and can’t stop talking and recommending cossham to every pregnant lady I see! If a fourth baby is ever on the cards I will 100% will be coming bk!

Being able to have my husband with me until it was time to leave the next day was just wonderful too, it was just an extra element to make the whole experience feel more relaxed and supportive.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Cossham to anyone considering giving birth there, it really is a special place.

20 weeks ago today 15/12 I gave birth to my 3rd baby unexpectedly at cossham, I had spent all night labouring at southmead but unfortunately I wasn’t dilating so was sent home, thankfully for me cossham is only 2 mins up the road from where I live because I knew I would never of made it bk to southmead without delivering, I can’t thank the midwife (Becky) and midwife assistant (jo) enough for taking me in and and delivering my beautiful little girl! I had the most amazing experience and can’t stop talking and recommending cossham to every pregnant lady I see! If a fourth baby is ever on the cards I will 100% will be coming bk!
