Coventry Copsewood Fc Description

Coventry Copsewood F. C. is part of Copsewood Sports and Social Club based in Allard Way, Coventry.
The club was originally founded as The ‘Connor’ by employees of Peel Connor who moved to Coventry from the North to form the club in 1922. Initially playing in the Coventry District League, the club changed its name for the first time in 1926 to Magnet FC, when the company Peel Connor integrated with Magnito Limited. The name was changed for a second time in 1934 when the club became known as GEC (Cov) FC. The name remained for fifty-four years up until 1988 when the club for the third time changed its name to GTP as a result of G. E. C. merging with Plessey to become GEC-Plessey Telecommunications. This consequently commenced another extravaganza of name changes. Eleven years on and the club name was to be changed again in 1999 when GTP became Marconi, and thus altered the club name to Marconi FC. The final and fifth name change occurred in 2005 when Marconi’s sports facilities were actioned off to British Land which attributed to their business demise. The club then became known as Coventry Copsewood.
The clubs most successful era came forth in the 70’s when under a spell of unmatched dominance Copsewood won its leagues Internal League Cup four times, The Coventry Telegraph Cup three times in succession and the Birmingham Junior Cup twice.
The club joined the Midland Football Combination in 1993, and despite three consecutive 5th place finishes the club achieved automatic promotion to Division One for its bewildering and exceptional facilities. Ashley Alexander and Gez O’Neill scooped the Manager of the Year award for the 1996 /97 season after they directed the club to a League and Cup double in Division 1. The following season ended in a 6th place finish in the Premier Division.
Due to a lack of floodlights for the 1998 /99 season, the club were forced to play their home games at VS Rugby’s ground until floodlights were purchased from Mangotsfield Town. In a dazzling co-operative effort the lights were then up-rated and erected by members of the club in March of 1999. A return home for Copsewood was imminent. 1998 /99 season ended in a satisfactory 8th place finish in the Premier Division for Copsewood, remarkable considering that most game were played away from home.

The appointment of Paul Mills was met with success in both the league and cups in the upcoming years. In 2003 /04 the club were runners-up in the Premier Division, and in 2004 /05 they finished third. Near-miss promotion seasons were sweetened with Mills’ side coming out three time victors in the Coventry Charity Cup.
Current Manager, Darren Dickson has been part of the club since 2008. He shared a seat at the helm of the club with Carl Nolan until 2012, when Carl took up a vacant manager’s post at Coventry Spinx. Since Carl Nolan’s departure, Darren, joined by Graham Walker and Ross Perkins inspired the club to victories in the Coventry Charity Cup, The Coventry Telegraph Cup and the Birmingham Mid-Week Cup.
