About Coventry Priory Visitors Centre

Coventry Priory Visitor Centre & Undercrofts achieved global recognition in 1999 when it was visited by Channel 4 Time Team at the request of Coventry City Council. Working alongside city archaeologists and Northampton Archaelogists they uncovered on their 1st visit to the city a burial chamber which was radio carbon dated to 870AD showing evidence that the site was occupied throughout the Anglo Saxon, Medieval and Tudor Period. St Osburgh founded a convent on this site before it was burned to the ground by The Vikings. Lady Godiva and her husband Leofric Earl of Mercia founded a Benedictine monsastery here for 24 friars and an Abbot between 1020 and 1030. On the 4th October 1043 the Priory was consecrated as a church. Leofric died and was buried in the church in 1057, ten years later in 1067 Godiva died and was buried in the Abbey. In 1102 the church was given full Cathedral status when Bishop Robert de Limesey moved his see from Chester to Coventry.
