About Cox'S Yard

Riverside pub & bar, serving up honest eats & an impressive range of lagers, real ales, wines & spirits. Don't forget to check out our coffee shop, 'The Pantry'!

Cox'S Yard Description

Situated along the beautiful river Avon just a stone’s throw from the centre of town, you’ll be hard pushed to find a better location to relax. Cox’s Yard leaves you spoilt for choice, boasting an all fresh food restaurant with a fantastic range of beers and wines, not to mention our Coffee Shop, offering cakes, light bites and homemade Gelato.

We are named after James Cox, a timber merchant who moved to the site to develop his fledgling business over 160 years ago. James Cox and Sons became well known in the area for supplying the finest materials, many of which were used to build today’s historic building in Shakespeare’s County. Whilst we obviously no longer trade timber, we do serve delicious food and drink, made from the finest ingredients, that’s not to be missed!

FANTASTIC Wedding Venue.

We got married at the RSC this weekend and then headed across to Coxs Yard for a big knees up... it's the perfect party venue. The upstairs of the building is a fantastic room with a tall wooden beam ceiling and looks fantastic lit up at night.

They couldn't do enough for us. Whatever we asked for, was always answered with a yes.

Stuart oversaw everything from a distance, and let us do pretty much whatever we wanted (the amount of wedding tat we wheeled in and out was phenomenal, but he was happy to just let his pub be taken over with helium balloons).

Event manager Anna was a darling, coincidentally an ex-student of the Bride, she was organising everything with us for weeks before, offering us every option you could think of (it could be said that we were quite demanding, but she again answered yes to all of our 'demands'!). On the evening she was a delight too, dressing up along with us and keeping a smile on her face until the early hours of the morning, not once letting the Bride's glass of fizz fall below half full.

Super-star-barman-Phil and Accomplice (sorry, I didn't catch your name!), the bar staff were worked hard by the thirsty Scouse-Devon wedding party, and they didn't disappoint. To quote Phil "Normally we only had 20 or so hard-core drinkers, but with you lot, it seems to be all of you!". Somehow they managed to keep up their jovial happy attitude throughout the whole of the night, still joking away after having served up a 100 or so G&Ts and Dark & Stormys! Fair play to you chaps.

We only stumbled across Coxs Yard when driving back from our engagement and popped in for a quick drink wondering if we could hire the place for a party. We started cheekily showing ourselves around, but were soon taken on the full tour by GM Neil. Top chap, and he very quickly let us know that nothing would be too much for them to accommodate.

Compliments to the Chef! I've head the words "best buffet I've ever had" uttered by at least a dozen guests, it really was a delight. Not only did he put on a glorious spread for over 100 guests, but he also took charge of assembling the wedding cake, putting out all of our extras and making sure it all looked fab.

We've not been paid by Coxs Yard, in fact I'm just settling up the final bill now. I'm not sure if we're still drunk from the party, or still on a 'newly married high', but it really was the best party we've ever been to (are you allowed to say that if it's your own?!). In all honesty, we cannot fault anything about the venue, food, drink or staff (who really were all exceptional). They even managed to accommodate a dodgy covers rock-band halfway through the night and looked after the DJ with everything he needed.

So to anyone thinking of booking Cox's Yard, do it... and send us an invite!

User

Nice place, good ambience, good location. Food was good but a little pricey. Staff were attentive and polite and recovered ok after spilling a basket of chips when presenting at the table. Overall experience was good though.

User

Nice setting. Decent pint and some staff ok. Generally looking a bit tired. My friend said the ladies loos were disgusting. I almost got stuck in the gents cubicle when the door jammed shut. Wouldn't recommend it.

User

Lovely location, shame it’s full of empty glasses outside on a quiet Monday afternoon. Even after my tactful attempt to mention it, nothing. Too busy I guess, I know it’s a dreadfully hard task. Let’s hope you all, one day, get to a basic level of customer service

User

It was nice to sit by the river and enjoy our drinks ....

User

Five of us had a meal. Starters were good. Everyone else had a burger and they were pleased with meals. I had fish and chips. Very disappointing, minute fish portion, barely anything there once oily batter was removed. Unable to identify fish. Definitely wasn’t cod.

We were seated at table close to toilets and doors at rear of pub. Twice asked to be moved but staff couldn’t accommodate request. Freezing cold night and every time someone opened doors to pub we had a blast of icy air.

Toilets dirty. Only three ladies cubicles. Very tiny and boiling hot as radiator blasting out heat. Nearly scalded myself. VERY dangerous. Suspect it would be a health and safety issue.

Verdict. Ok but probably only return in summer for drinks in courtyard area

User

Drinks are a little pricey. 2 of us had the fish & chips which was lovely but another in our party had the ceasar salad & for £13 was very disappointed. We gave him some of our chunky chips to keep him going!

User

Male host was polite and well organised. We had to wait 25mins plus for a table. He helped to clear our table and we sat down at around 205pm. The female server said she will be back in 2 mins. At 225pm I decided to go to the bar and search for the host or server in which I couldn't find either. A new female host had just came on who didn't seem very happy to help and was not as organised as the gent before hand. I explained that we had been seated but no-one had come back for orders etc which she replied where are you sitting. I told her and within 5 mins the original server appeared again. Food was ok, not great. Disappointed in the long wait by the server as it was a hot day today and we were all thirsty. Food I felt was over priced but then again we are in Stratford. ( Female host did stand in the doorway alot and would watch people sit in the empty seats, she would then March over and tell them that we are not seating people here till 3pm. She even put a hand written note on one of the tables.)

User

I think we sat on the invisible table! No one came to take drink order within 10 mins. Went to bar and took them another 10 mins to come over. Drinks order was wrong. Took ages for food order to be taken. Food was nice apart from my sons steak - never a sirloin cut and full of fat, gristle and bone. Again nobody asked if meal was ok had to try and get attention for condiments, had to flag someone down for more drinks. Toilets were disgusting with no toilet roll worse than some loos I’ve seen on a Saturday night! All in all food ok service shocking!!

User

Well if I could not give a star I wouldn't! Went here today for a treat as it's my birthday tomorrow from my best friend and it was awful from the start and got worse!

So we're not from Stratford and travelled over an hour to find out it was the canal festival thing which meant hundreds of people and was totally unaware. Couldn't park anywhere and so went into the venue to ask where could park after advising was out of Towners and that we had a table booked for 2pm and would probably be late, only to be told by some "snotty kid" yes a young lad behind the bar it's busy there's no parking find somewhere and that was it. No "that's fine we'll keep your table, there's parking at such and such... nothing. So 3/4hr later after finding a space we got back to the venue and asked another kid where we could speak to someone and sort our reservation and got mumbled at and when asked pardon what did you say was shouted at to look for

Some guy outside in a hat. So we found who we thought was the guy in the hat, explained and kindly seated us. Great or so we thought.... lovely young girl served us, half way through starter the shouty kid wanted to take plates and hadn't even finished! Then just observed some "manager" talking to customers like something scraped off their plates and marching people around when coming off the canal for a drink! Then it gets worse. Eating mains and a kid comes

Out with someone else's food and drops it, it goes all Over my mate and not even an apology.... nothing. She goes toilet (which are disgusting by the way) I leave my food and put sunglasses on table to help her out asking who I found to be the manager later where the toilet was. Returns to table they've thrown the food and drinks away!! Hadn't even finished. Spoke to the manager and explained what had happened and offered to replace food and there would be no charge after a sarky "you didn't tell me you was coming back for food" so he thought we were leaving then without paying? (Had no intentions too anyway) we left with an offer of dry cleaning bill payment and no charge for the food. Would never go here again. Read a reply on trip advisor after a bad review and you'll see the oozing of unprofessionalism and sarcasticness in that which sums this place to a tee!!

User

We visited yesterday afternoon at arou d 5pm. 6 staff behind the bar, 2 or 3 serving and talking amongst themselves.

The others were too busy to be bothered with customers, or even notice they were standing waiting.

We waited for 20 mins to get served, then just when it was our turn to get our long awaited drinks, the barman just lifted his head and said to the guy who arrived at least 5 mins after us and said yes please mate. So when you visit Stratford if you want a nice pint and service with a smile and quickly avoid Foxes Yard and go to

The Pen & Parchment or

The Encore.

If your driving Coxes Yard is the ideal ace to drink, you'll never get the chance to be over the drink drive limit

User

Not a good experience I’m afraid. It’s nice to take my family out for food occasionally, I can’t afford to do it very often so I want to make sure it’s good when I do. This wasn’t. We visited yesterday afternoon and it started going wrong from the minute we walked in. Having two small children we can’t always walk through a pub as quickly as a group of adults, and I didn’t appreciate impatient sighing from the young female staff member who wanted to overtake us. Big queue at the bar, yes a queue, with three unhappy, unwelcoming bar staff. Kids were hungry and as we had found a table we decided to stay to eat. Big mistake. Pulled pork nachos to start, which were hot, fresh and very nice to be fair. Our main courses were dire though. It was all lukewarm at best, and the burgers my wife and I chose were inedible, at £14 a go. The Dexter burger as they call it is apparently made from 28 day aged, beer fed, 100% beef. Sounds good right? No. The burger was full of lumps of gristle, fat, dread to think, and tasted cheap. It had that uniform circular square edged appearance and smooth industrial texture that cheap freezer shop burgers have, which I suspect it was. Anyway it was so bad we couldn’t eat them. We didn’t ask to see the manager, as we didn’t want to make a scene with the kids there, but he came over to our table anyway and then proceeded to argue with us about the burgers when we politely explained the issue, which instantly gets my back up, instead of just apologising. Insulting my intelligence by telling me something I’ve just eaten is 100% beef when it clearly isn’t does not go down well with me, nor does telling me that it’s only us who has complained that day. Clearly not, if you look at the very recent 1* reviews on Trip Advisor (We didn’t even complain, we just asked the waitress to take it all away). Eventually he gave us a discount on the bill, which removed most of the value of the offending burgers.

Anyway, I won’t be going back and won’t be recommending it to anyone. It’s a shame, as with better management and attitude this place could be amazing.

User

I could leave a long and ranting review.....but may aswell just get straight to the point.....rude and unprofessional staff, they was all kids with bad attitudes...bad service....no manners....lack of management....the list could go on but what's the point no one will offer any sort of apology.

Appreciate it was busy when we went but that's no excuse for the crappy service after we travelled over an hour to get there after seeing that it seemed a really nice place to visit.

Anyway won't be going there again 👎

User

Clearly looking down through these reviews, no one at Cox's yard ever checks them.

No one who has had a bad experience is ever apologised too. Far too busy to cope with customers and will no doubt still be busy and not care that people have had a bad meal experience. Love Stratford but will eat somewhere else in future.

Oh and the toilets were disgusting when I was in there yesterday....

User

Admittedly it was bank holiday weekend,however..the bar smells of stale spilt beer, the bar top was sticky with spilt beer .ok so bank holiday so busy, maybe a bit behind.however 20 mins waiting to be served as bar staff have no clue who has just arrived as the 3 that were on just served whoever was in front of them when they stopped walking.once I finally got served a very nice pint! Went outside to my family to find every single table piled with glasses and bottles.in the hour we stayed one girl cleared one table! Would I go again?? Yes if very quiet , but otherwise very disappointed . Hiring bar staff because of a superb moustache or topknot does not good bar staff make

User

5 Of ya ordered rare sirloin steaks all

Came well done. Sent two back for. Orrectly cookwd ones and came back a second time well done. Chef came out and said they were ok. He told the waiting in staff that they could deal with it and walked off. How rude. The young man waiting in was more than helpful and voided the bill. Not a good experience.
