Let’s kick off #sharkweek with one of my favourite specimens - a massive set of genuine Great White Shark jaws, from a ~16 foot shark. The genuine antique ex-medical human teenage skull in the middle gives you an idea of size! The jaws measure 22 inches tall, 24 inches wide, with some of the teeth measuring over 2 inches long! An expert on shark jaws has suggested that they came from a shark approximately 16 ft long! The Great White Shark is listed as Annex B in the EU wild...life trade regulations, meaning that this specimen is only allowed to be bought and sold within the EU. This specimen was imported from Africa prior to needing import permits by the client of a taxidermist. The client died, and his widow gave them to the taxidermist, I acquired them from the taxidermist. It is illegal to import great white shark jaws into the UK now, therefore making these a rare specimen. Jess and Mickey have been good customers for years. It’s always a pleasure seeing them, and their 3 daughters (one was asleep in the stroller). They are moving to Switzerland next week, and so they came so that the 4 year old daughters, Maia and Daisy, could hand pick some pretty butterflies for their new home. I framed them while the waited - watching me work; fascinated by the different colours on the dorsal and ventral sides of each butterfly; with interludes of putting th...eir hands in the mouth of a tiger and counting the fingers and toes on a skeleton. They made some fine choices! They even helped me identify them 😜 looking through my butterlfy books trying to find them. #throwback 9 years ago today I graduated from Aberystwyth University, with a bachelor’s degree with honours in Zoology. I did a four year course, and my dissertation was ‘Rhinoceros Horn: Aspects of Biology and Sociology’. I proudly, or rather sadly 😂, sign each of my insect cases ‘James Cranfield, B.Sc. (hons)’.
