Date: Thursday 14 March 2019 Crawley Lightning 59, Worthing D&D 47
Top of the league, Crawley Lightning ladies discovered that the league table is not always a clear indicator of how a match will go, when they travelled down to Worthing to take on fifth seated D&D. Recently acquired players raised D&D's game coupled with a tenacious and aggressive play. Lightning found themselves on the back foot maintaining a minimal lead throughout the first half. Early in third quarter D&D... briefly pulled ahead, but Crawley began to lift their game and take back control, closing the third quarter with nine unanswered point. In a very physical game Crawley score 15 from the free throw line which proved significant as the game came to a close.
Lightning will welcome D&D back to Holy Trinity in Crawley, on Monday 25th March, for the first round of the league cup tournament.
Walker 17, Webber 16, Roche 9, Walsh 7, Rose 4, Retter 3, Rham 3

League: Basketball Sussex (Women) Date: Monday, 04 March Crawley Lightning 79, SRWA Bears 32
Having their third game in eight days, Crawley Lightning’s match schedule was beginning to feel like something from the Premier League, as they laced up their boots to meet the SRWA Bears this past Monday at Holy Trinity. With some of their key players missing, Lightning called upon Sas Thompson from their development squad to fill out the numbers. They knew that they could not tak...e the notoriously aggressive Bears for granted and determined to start the game with full intensity. With the simple plan of solid defence followed by a quick paced moving the ball up the court, Crawley outplayed their visitors 21-10 in the first quarter.
They maintained the momentum finishing the half with a lead of 37-16. Following an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical foul, the Bears playmaker Jasohina was ejected from the game in the second half which proved a real lost to their side. Lightning capitalized and continuing to pour in the fast breaks with the hustling of their guards Walsh, Retter, Thompson, Hester and Walker followed up by high percentage shooting from Lea-Clayton, solid work in the paint by lead scorer Rose, and the steady leadership of team captain Rham. After the difficult games of last week, it was go to see the ladies from Crawley finding their flow again. No doubt they will enjoy a break in the schedule next week before heading down to Worthing on March 14.
Rose: 16, Lea-Clayton: 14, Hester 12: Walsh 11, Rham:7, Worthing: 7, Retter: 6, Thompson: 6.

Thunder headed down to play Worthing D&D on Thursday evening. D&D were a well rounded side, however, early on Thunder were able to identify that D&D had two very skilful players that they needed to keep their eyes on, tough marking on these two would give Thunder the opportunity to take their first win of the season.
The occcasion saw a big improvement in Thunders game play, with each member of the team proving their worth and showing what they have work hard on in training.... Thunder with a mix of novice and experienced players fought hard to prevent D&D from scoring, they played good defence and manage to stay within 4 at the half time break.
The third quarter proved fruitful for Thunder with super teamwork and shooting opportunities taken, with only a few minutes on the clock Thunder were down by 3 points, and saw a real opportunity to take their first win of the season. Unfortunately some turnovers from Thunder and clinical shooting from D&D saw the game finish 41-54. A very good performance from Thunder. Thunder now get back into training ready for their cup game against Rother Rockets on the 18th Feb.

@BognorAmazons vs Crawley Lightning 59-62 after extra time
Undefeated Lightning travelled down to Bognor for their second game of 2019. It was a nail biting encounter with both teams leaving their blood sweat and tears on the court. Lightning started strong with 6 unanswered baskets before Bognor got on the score sheet. Lightning ends the first up by 5. Bognor came out strong in the second quarter with a point to prove (having never lost to Crawley). Unfortunately, Lightni...ng let their discipline drop and sent Bogor to the line several times and Bognor took their chances. Lightning unwilling to the let them take control of the game, regrouped hustled hard and went into the half down by 1. In the third quarter Lightning took the game to Bognor l allowing only 4 points to be scored and scoring 15 themselves. A solid defence and fresh legs allowed Lightning to capitalise on their hard work, bringing the lead to 10. Going into the 4th with both teams eager to win the fight continued, Bognor stepped up their defence to put the pressure on Lightning, with 30 seconds left Bognor tied the game with a 3 point effort driving us into over time. 5 minutes on the clock Lighting were focussed and upped the intensity to creep away from an ever chasing Bognor. Baskets were exchanged but Lighting proved they had nerves of steal and with some fantastic ‘stands’ by Helen and amazing shooting from Millie took the game 59-62.

Patience and teamwork kept Lightning in the front and held off the attacks of their aggressors resulting in a 56-33 win. Lightning was lead by Bro...gan Webber and Millie Lea-Clayton who raked up ten points each for the team.

A great team performance from Lightning against Sussex Bears Basketball Club tonight. The score doesn’t reflect how close the game felt, but lightning dug deep, defended hard, took the fast breaks, played hard and took the win. Great effort from both teams.
