Crook Hall & Gardens Description

The 13th century Grade I listed Medieval hall provides a spectacular backdrop to the stunning gardens. Visitors from all over the world come to share in the timeless magic of Crook Hall and leave inspired by these idyllic English theme gardens.

Soak up the atmosphere over a homemade cream tea in the pretty courtyard or in front of a log fire in the Georgian dining room.

The gardens are just a short walk from the city's bustling market place. Country Life described the Hall as having "history, romance and beauty", and its just waiting to capture your heart.

***CURRENT ART EXHIBITION***
Angela Tracy ‘A Year in Crook Hall Gardens’
... 6th March – 5th May
Angela Tracy is a Durham based artist, who expresses her love for nature through her pen and ink drawings.
The exhibition will run from the 6th March until the 5th May.
Her passion for drawing and painting began as a young child and continued through into adulthood, while she pursued a career in education and brought up her family. Now retired, she works in her studio, where she continues to be inspired by her garden and the local hedgerows.
2018 brought a new and exciting challenge for Angela, as she documented the changing seasons in Crook Hall Gardens through her photographs, pen and ink drawings and watercolours; the Winter trees, the first hellebores, aconites and snowdrops, the Spring flowers that lift the spirit, the brash colours of the Summer garden and the nasturtiums, berries and leaves in the Autumn, bringing late colour before the Winter. Her year long journey has now been culminated in an exhibition at Crook Hall.
She says: ‘It’s been a real privilege spending a whole year in Crook Hall Gardens, observing and recording the changes throughout the year – and there was always so much variety and colour. A special thanks to Ann the Head Gardener and her staff for answering all my questions!’’
Her work will be on display in the Exhibition Room at Crook Hall & Gardens and many items will be for sale. Angela is also displaying her sketchbooks in which she documented her journey through the year.
Her work will be on display in the Exhibition Room at Crook Hall & Gardens and both original paintings and prints are available for purchase.

Thank you so much to Rachael & Aidan for sharing your beautiful wedding photos with us and leaving us this wonderful comment 😍😍😍
"We had our wedding at Crook Hall in March and it was the best day! From the minute we arrived I felt like someone else was in control and everything ran smoothly. There was not a single issue and if there was this was fixed without our knowledge which is exactly what you need when you’re enjoying the best day of your life. The girls were so helpful and nothing was an problem for them. Guests have commented since how smoothly the day ran, without any breaks or time with nothing to do. I would highly recommend Crook Hall and their staff to those planning their special day. We wish we could do it all again"

Went to visit Crook Hall with my partner Richie we had delicious Quiche for lunch in the cafe at the entrance and gorgeous cream scones during the afternoon in the Courtyard Cafe. The gardens were a stunning array of vivid and pastel colours and all the different gardens and spaces around the hall had their own delightful, different characteristics. The house itself is full of history which is well displayed and communicated in words and photos. I first visited Crook Hall some years ago and since then it has been transformed into an even more beautiful place to visit. Can't wait for my next visit.

We had our wedding here in June , it was a lovely day with the hall and gardens looking their best.We had several visits in the lead up to the big day , the staff were so helpful and Donna our wedding planner was brilliant . The day itself was memorable , everything ran so smoothly , the staff were polite, efficient and couldn't do enough for us , it was like having a group of friends organising the day for us. We had afternoon tea at the reception , it was beautifully presented with more than enough for everyone ( lots of doggy bags went home that day ! )

We had a wonderful time at Crook Hall today and loved taking part in the Apple Day - it was such a lovely activity for children and adults alike and, as ever, it was so nice to spend time in the Hall and Gardens. My parents, who had not visited Crook Hall before, were very impressed with the beauty of the setting, the lovely Hall and Gardens and the warmth of the welcome. Thank you so much for organising it and for being so generous and kind as to share your fruit with us!

Was married here 17/03/2018 can’t recommend enough, from the very first meeting to the day itself the staff were amazing. The rooms on the day exceeded expectations everything worked so well. Can’t thank the staff enough they worked endlessly to give us the most perfect day ever in the most perfect wedding venue ever.

All our guests commented on how we had chosen the most magical setting for our big day.

Afternoon tea was first class and the hog roast on the evening went down a treat.

Thank you once again for making our special day that extra bit special.

User

Thank you to everyone at Crook Hall for making our wedding day so special. It is such a beautiful venue and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. Thanks to all the team who worked so hard setting up and looking after us. Highly recommended to anyone thinking of getting married here. Love Kirstin and David Jones xx

Really peaceful with beautiful gardens and the hall was lovely. Took an 8 and 9 year old who loved running through the maze, gardens and exploring the hall and as it was not too busy, even wth it being the school holidays, they could do so without being pests to other visitors. Maybe over priced as it is very small but would definitely return when there was an event on and it seems if you pay a little more you get an annual pass. We ate at the cafe with cute crockery and delicious cakes. Would certainly recommend.

User

I recently shot a wedding at Crook Hall and the staff are awesome. Nicola & co looked after me insanely well, and served up a vegan afternoon tea which was absolutely awesome! It's not the first time I've been a wedding photographer here, but each time just gets better! :)

I cannot praise crook hall and gardens enough. I attended today for afternoon tea for my mums birthday. It was delightful. I have eaten afternoon tea at many places and this was the best by far. More importantly i am currently unable to eat dairy and soya due to my daughters allergys. Crook hall is THE only place to offer to make a dairy and soya free afternoon tea. It was delicious and the cakes were yummy! The staff were lovely and very attentive. Providing toys for 3 year old daughter.

The gardens were beautiful and we will certainly be returning for another visit. Thankyou so much to crook hall for catering for my allergies it means alot. You certainly are ahead of time! X

Had the pleasure of enjoying a lovely afternoon tea with my friends and it was excellent. Being able to walk round the hall and gardens after such a treat topped it off. What a lovely place and a real hidden gem, get yourselves there peeps!

User

Food was delicious, the tray was full of fresh backed cakes and scones, the young lady who served us was lovely and gave us a box to take the cakes we hadn’t managed to eat home with us.

It was a birthday treat to me from my daughter, I’ll be returning for my grandaughters birthday

User

Can not rate this beautiful place and the staff highly enough! We had afternoon tea in the hall yesterday afternoon for my friends baby shower, and the service from booking throughout was fantastic. Will definitely be returning and would highly recommend.

User

Attended a wedding evening reception here yesterday. It was my first time to Crook Hall and what a wonderful place it is, the gardens are lovely and the house itself is intriguing. Really nice place well worth a visit. I will be returning with my family in the near future and to try the afternoon tea. I will look forward to it!

Amazing time at Harry Potter themed cream tea yesterday. I have lots of dietary requirements and everything I had was still so delicious

User

A wonderful, place with beautiful gardens and hall. We came as a small family group for a special day to remember our mum/gran and planted in her memory in the stunning gardens with the kind permission of the owners. We couldn't have wished for a better place to be and share our memories whilst sitting in the garden filled with the scent of roses, for afternoon tea. The setting and service we received was beyond expectations and we would like to thank everyone for making it such a special day. Perfect in every way. We will be visiting as often as we can.

A hidden gem in the centre of Durham. It's been many years since my last visit and I was not disappointed. A few new modern changes (gate cafe and quiet area) but all the original wonders of the main hall and walled gardens were still there. The extension of the gardens was breathtaking especially as it was such a lovely day. I spent all day here and moved around different parts of the gardens reading my book and I found it incredibly peaceful. The food was delicious in the gate cafe (I ended up their twice - first for cake and then scones!) Staff were attentive without being pushy and it was lovely to be able to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. I will definitely be back (I have more cake to try!)

User

A double birthday celebration, we were seated in a secluded part of the garden, gorgeous. So pretty! The table was presented beautifully and the service was faultless . A fabulous afternoon, dreamy. Choice of cakes nice although a lot of sponges (where was the lemon torte, or miniature trifles & mousses ?). However, the sandwiches were good and also the cream scones.

User

Should really be a 4 and a half star option. Afternoon tea lovely, staff lovely and nice gardens, but poor signs meant we walked into the kitchen and no heater in the toilet at this time of year.

User

Lovely place for a picnic and walk around the gardens. The house is quite small and not as well thought out as it could be due to one room being used to house prints but the afternoon tea in the grounds looked delicious. The entrance is hard to find as you have to go through the Gate Cafe which is part of the Crook Hall but is not signposted as such so we nearly walked away thinking the entrance was elsewhere. Overall a nice little place to visit for an hour or two.

User

Went for afternoon tea on Fathers-day. Was really looking forward to it as it contained some of my favourite foods such as chunky bread, pork pies and pickled onions.

When it came there was none of these foods and instead they got replaced with celery, grapes and mini cheddars and upon asking where they were I was told they often substitute items due to stock which I think is shocking, especially when the substitutions are not as good as the original items

As we paid upfront before we came we decided to write a complaint to which we got a email apologising and hoping to see us soon however no offer of a discount for returning or a partial refund or even a pork pie

Its a shame really as the grounds and staff were lovely and we spend a few hours in he gardens, however out of principal I wont be returning

Still cant believe you can substitute the menu like that, replacing the pork pie with celery!
