Croxton Kerrial Cricket Club Description

A Brief History

Croxton Kerrial Cricket Club was formed in 1980 by among others H. Ward, R. Lord, B. Marriott, J. Crossland, G. Botterill, D. Cox and C. George. In that first season money was raised by holding regular bingo nights. This money went to pay for the equipment that was essential for the maintenance of the wicket and at that time a ground rental was paid per game. The first of this kit was bought by J. Crossland from Eddison plant hire and nets were donated to the club by Denton cricket club; now defunct.

The first game was played on the 4th May 1980 at Caythorpe and Croxton were set a total of 134 to win. The team that day consisted of thirteen players, so likely it was a friendly and they were 73 all out. The members of that first team were Simon Derby, David Copley, Ian Raithby, Andrew Bass, John Pearce, R Childs, John Copley, David Crossland, Nigel Radford, Gary Walker, Micheal Copley, Peter Green and John Thurlby.

In the first two years of the clubs existence, current opening bowler Dave Crossland only bowled 25 overs in total. Most of the runs in the early years were scored by John Pearce, John Crossland and David Copley.

Croxtons first home game was played on the 16th May 1980 against Woolsthorpe. Woolsthorpe batting first and reaching 133-3 in 20 overs. In reply Croxton were 88-6 after 20 overs.

Since the Clubs inception over 25 years ago, there have been many highs and lows both on and off the field; at all times though, the players and officials are always seeking to play the game in the right spirit and are constantly on the lookout for new recruits. . .
