Cumbria'S Museum Of Military Life Description

Cumbria‘s Museum of Military Life was founded in 1932 and tells the 300-year story of Cumbria’s army regiments through books, documents, photographs and artefacts.

Having recently moved to the newly refurbished Alma Block in Carlisle Castle the Museum is full of new features including audio /visual displays, impressive graphics, interactive activities for young people and environments depicting life in the World Wars.

Our brand new on site Cafe serves light lunches, hot and cold drinks and a range of cakes.

The Museum also offers research services for families looking to research those who served with The Border Regiment and it's successors. We also accommodate school groups and have a program of outreach services for schools, groups and clubs.

To mark its 75th anniversary, Tim Bean reveals the story behind one of Britain's greatest battles. In 1944, the all-conquering Japanese Army launched a major offensive against India's north-east frontier. Supported by a division of the Indian National Army, their intention was to pre-empt the Allied re-invasion of South East Asia, and potentially seize control of India.
Against a backdrop of mountainous jungle terrain, monsoon rains, and hazardous lines of communication, Brit...ish, Indian, Gurkha, African, American, Chinese, and local indigenous tribes took on a dogged and menacing enemy in some of the hardest fought and bloodiest engagements in history.
Tim Bean, Senior Lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, examines this crucial turning point in one of the most gruelling campaigns of the Second World War at the Museum on Tuesday 23 April at 6pm. Tickets: £5

Very interesting exhibits & friendly staff.

My partner's mum fell over in the museum & the staf couldn't have been more helpful. A lovely lady, Jules, was brilliant! Thank you.

User

Very helpful staff, was donating a couple if portraits of soldiers, but didn't have time for a good look round, Will be back to explore further. Not been in the museum since it moved to its new home in the Alma building but it was always very good even in the old block in the inner bailey.

The WRAF Branch of RAFA held their AGM and dinner at the museum. The museum provided rooms for the AGM and in the evening provided facilities for the dinner, catering provided by Liz's Country Kitchen. All our members agreed this was the best AGM to date, great venue and all the staff are so helpful. Our members loved the WRAF memorabilia set out by the staff.
