Please note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, our original headliner Panya Banjoko is unfortunately no longer able to perform at this event. However, we are thrilled to welcome Birmingham-based British Pakistani poet and playwright Nafeesa Hamid as our new headliner.
Join NTU's Writer in Residence Bridie Squires, and Birmingham-based poet Nafeesa Hamid, for a night of poetry and spoken word at our Brackenhurst Campus.
The evening will begin with an open mic, featuring partici...pants from our NTU x NTSU Spoken Wordshop, followed with support from Joshua Judson and Cleo Asabre-Holt, and a set from our headliner Nafeesa Hamid
Nafeesa Hamid is a British Pakistani poet and playwright based in Birmingham, UK. She has featured at poetry nights around the UK and was invited as a performer at TedxBrum 2016 (Power of Us). Nafeesa is published in The Things I Would Tell You: British Muslim Women Write, a recent (2017) anthology publication by Saqi Books, edited by Sabrina Mahfouz. She is also published in the WOMAN anthology with Mud Press (2017). Her debut collection Besharam (2018) is available to purchase from Verve Poetry Press. She is a BBC Edinburgh Fringe Slam finalist (2018).
Joshua Judson is a poet and editor from Nottingham. His work has appeared in publications such as Magma, The North, Brittle Star, and The White Review. He is currently working on the manuscript for his debut pamphlet, which is to be entitled Lad.
Cleo Asabre-Holt is a poet and writer who has performed across the region, in London and internationally. Her work explores relationships, mental health, childhood and the urge to dance. She supported Hollie McNish and Roger McGough at Nottingham Poetry Festival 2018, and was a finalist in the search for Nottingham’s first Young Poet Laureate.
This event is open to everyone aged 16+.
Free entry, no need to book.

Join NTU's Writer in Residence Bridie Squires and Beeston based poet Chris McLoughlin for a night of poetry and spoken word as part of this year's Nottingham Poetry Festival.
The evening will begin with an open mic, featuring participants from our NTU x NTSU Spoken Wordshop, followed with support from Becky Cullen and Jo Dixon (Poetry M*thers) and Danai Dee Denga, and a set from our headliner Chris McLoughlin.
Chris McLoughlin is a writer, performer and workshop facilitator. ...His poetry focuses primarily on mental health, creating safe environments for others to explore emotional difficulties. He has published two poetry collections, Breakdown and Lose Your Armour, with Nottingham Publisher Big White Shed. Chris co-runs Nottingham Poetry Collective Write The Poem.
Danai Dee Denga is a poet who finds traces of her identity in Harare, Nottingham and Birmingham. She is an alumnus of Nottingham's Mouthy Poets Collective and is currently completing an MA in African Studies at Birmingham University. Her work focuses on myths, identity, belonging and believes that love is a political thing.
Becky Cullen is a poetry mother from Nottingham and a research fellow and lecture at NTU. She writes about people who are in the wrong place at the right time, in poems that 'shine and crackle with their own dark electricity' (Liz Berry). Her pamphlet Majid Sits in a Tree and Sings was winner of the 2018 Poetry Business International Book and Pamphlet competition.
Jo Dixon's debut pamphlet, Woman in the Queue, was published by Melos Press in 2016. A poet, critic and academic, she is interested in the way a poem can be a moment of surprise for the writer and reader, in which they understand something from a new or different perspective.
This event is open to everyone aged 16+.
