Cyber Cafe Scientifique

We started out as a small, local Cafe Scientifique running from a wine bar in Woking 7 years ago. Some time afterwards we outgrew the space available, and so moved to the Lightbox art gallery for our monthly events. When lockdown hit we wanted to continue the conversation, bringing science out of an academic setting for public discussion. We cooked up an approach, sorted out the technology, and launched our first event at the end of March. Since then we've had weekly free events with a growing audience, supported only by voluntary donations from attendees. Once physical events become possible again we fully intend to keep going as we've found the breadth of speakers we can access, and the opportunities for international engagement, more than balance out the limits that online events bring. We also find that with a bit of adjustment, audience engagement in the discussion is as strong as ever.
