About Dartmoor Zoological Park

We're just 20 minutes from Plymouth City Centre

Dartmoor Zoological Park Description

A unique zoo set in 33 acres of beautiful parkland just 20 mins from Plymouth.

We have a fantastic collection which includes an impressive selection of big cats, bear, wolves, meerkats, tapir and much much more.

Our restaurant serves hot and cold, drinks and meals and we can cater for all kinds of events up to 200 people including weddings.

The Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Mee wrote a book about buying the zoo called, We Bought a Zoo. This later became the subject of a major Hollywood movie of the same name starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johannson.

10 years on the zoo has been through a roller coaster journey but the conversion to charity in 2014 has strengthened it's future and opened up new and exciting opportunities.

It was a very close vote but the keepers have decided to call our new Grant's Zebra Hugh! Congratulations to Jeannette Sims who suggested this name. Hugh is settling in well, and he and Forest are calling to each other. We hope they will be able to meet properly soon. Thank you for all of your great name suggestions, and well done to Jeannette, please message to the zoo to arrange your free ticket.

Everyone’s talking about the final episode of BBC Earth's Dynasties last night on Indian tigress Raj Bhera. Make sure you catch it on iPlayer if you missed it and do come and see our tigers Alisha and Dragan soon.

🐯We have two tigers here, so we’re definitely watching BBC Dynasties tonight at 8pm on the struggle of a tigress in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in India to protect her four tiny newborn cubs.

The cats and Hayley bear will be out in their enclosures shortly as the wind gusts have died down. It's a little breezy here and there, but the sun is trying to come out!

Many organisations are realising the great benefits of supporting their employees to get involved in #volunteering. We regularly welcome teams from a range of businesses who benefit from the exercise, outdoor environment and interaction with our animals. As a charity, every visit makes a huge difference to us too!

The cats and Hayley Bear are in for the night due to the blustery weather conditions. The wind is forecast to drop in the morning and we are hoping they will be able to come out and see you by 12 o' clock. We'll keep you posted...

❄️🌨 #ThrowbackThursday to March 2018 when the snow took us all by surprise, apart from the winter-proof Lynx of course, who thought we were all over-reacting. Who is hoping for a white Christmas this year?

User

🎄⭐️We're looking forward to welcoming you all to our Christmas Do at the Zoo, where businesses are invited to enjoy an evening of all things festive! There's still time to book your space, email events@dartmoorzoo.co.uk for more information.

Today is International Volunteer Day so we would like to say a massive thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to support what we do everyday. As a zoo we are a member of BIAZA, there are so many volunteers across all BIAZA collections and we are glad that our volunteers get to be a part of this incredible community. #BIAZA #IVD2018

Our girl Josie was one amazing character and will never be forgotten by our staff. She has been captured brilliantly here by one of our visitors and photographers Paul Fines, with her partner in crime Jasiri and doing what she loved, climbing trees #dartmoorzoo #lioness #weboughtazoo #cymrufach3231

We are devastated to announce the death of our beautiful African lioness Josie on Wednesday 28th November. Josie had such a personality and a presence, that it’s very hard to imagine life at the zoo without her. Born at Dartmoor over 18 years ago, Josie had been at the zoo for longer than any of the current staff; she was the last cat to have lived here since before the Mee family bought the zoo in 2006.
29th August 2000 saw the arrival of three African lion cubs, the fourth ...

We visited the park yesterday (5th April) and it was a lovely day!! I have been wanting to visit ever since I moved to England from the US 5 years ago! I loved that there were signs on the animals enclosure that made reference to the movie if there was one!! That was great fun to see! Would have liked to see more hot food available in the Jaguar Restaurant and I really wanted a coffee/tea mug as a souvenir from the shop but did not have this (only a bamboo cup). Helpful to have the talk times etc printed on the map and got to plan our visit to participate in some of these! All the staff seemed knowledgeable, friendly, and enjoy their jobs/work they do which is really nice to see! I hope to return in the near future for even more fun experiences at Dartmoor Zoo!!

User

We had such a good day at the zoo for my daughters early birthday treat and her first ever visit too a zoo. I’m so glad we chose to visit as she absolutely loved it. Especially the peacocks and the lions. Would definitely recommend others to visit.

User

We came today as we had a voucher from the aquarium, it was lovely, it was so hot though so some of the enclosures were empty but got to see lots of other gorgeous animals. We would have stayed longer for the bear talk but our two year old had other ideas. The areas aren't totally buggy friendly a bit of off roading- only what you'd expect at Dartmoor! All part of the adventure and we loved it, will definitely be returning. xx

User

Visited it today and absolutely loved it. The animals looked well cared for, with a lot of enrichment available. The kids had 5 hours' of fun and have had a chance to see a variety of talks and get to ask the volunteers questions, as well as handle some animals.

User

Took my 20yr old sons for the wolf encounter yesterday, had a fantastic day, the keepers were both engaging and informative, such a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Well worth the money and the drive

User

The whole family had an amazing day for James's birthday today, can't thank Amber and Kate enough and all the staff, they were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed and the cake was yum!

User

Thank you so much Justin for the incredible Wolf encounter! It was amazing to see how the wolves reacted to seeing you and to learn so much about them. Hope your racoon dogs are okay

User

Thank you for a wonderful day yesterday! I was lucky enough to win a raffle to go behind the scenes with the lynx and this experience just added to what had already been an amazing day. The zoo is beautiful and the staff were so friendly. We listened to most of the talks throughout the day and Justin is so knowledgeable and talks with such passion about the animals and conservation. When we are back in Devon we will definitely be returning for another visit.

Our family has just spent a few hours at the Zoological Park and had a great time . We had lunch in the restaurant and I had phoned ahead to check if they had a gluten free item on the menu or if I should take my own food but I was assured I would be catered for and I was. The staff were attentive and polite and the restaurant was clean and the food was delicious.

Out in the park an interesting collection of animals and even though it was really cold today we had an enthusiastic keeper talking us through the tiger feeding regime.

Lots of play areas for the little ones.

An enjoyable day. Elsewhere on social media I saw a mention of the entry price. High welfare for animals does not come cheap neither does public liability insurance - put that together with workplace pensions and wages/heating etc we can actually see where our money goes.

Tax payers can also gift aid .. it all helps visitor attractions such as these .

Thanks you Sparkwell we will return (hopefully when the sun comes out)

On the 2nd July 2018 me and my boyfriend Mark experienced being a big cat keeper for a day. I bought this as a present for him a few months before. What a fantastic, memorable and interesting day. Alex and Alec, our keepers helping us for the day were lovely. The love and passion they had for the zoo and the welfare of the animals really was wonderful. We spent the day helping clean, feed and learn about all the big cats, wolves and Hayley the lovely bear. It was truly a wonderful day and would recommend it to anyone. Thankyou!!

User

Lovely small zoo with a team who love their time working with the animals!

Visited for a birthday treat, unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but you get so close to the animals - who cares if there’s a bit of rain!

Prices weren’t expensive and a lot of efforts been made to make it very family friendly.

Thoroughly recommend visiting if you are in the Plymouth area for a holiday.

User

Just had the most amazing team building day at the park i can’t thank everyone enough for making us feel so welcome, excellent food, fantastic friendly informative staff and volunteers, what a great bunch of people, thank you so much!

User

I am not a massive animal lover but i came today with my mum and 6 day old daughter. And loved it. The staff where friendly and answered any questions I had. My daughter will not remember it, but will bring her again with her big brother so he can see all the animals too... the enclosure are well kept and animals are well looked after. I would definitely recommend coming here there is lots of activities going on for you to watch. A*******

User

Have just had the pleasure of partaking in the wolf howl experience. This was incredible, so much so that I am still sat watching the wolves to write this review. From start to finish it was more than I ever imagined it would be. The staff are exceptional with such knowledge and understanding of the packs. So nice to see such passion and respect for the animals with a hunger to pass on their knowledge and educate. I cannot recommend this more if I tried. Great for everyone with a love for animals and wolves no matter of age or knowledge level. Thank you for an amazing day.

User

Had the best day at Dartmoor zoo yesterday with my husband and Grandson. The place is amazing and has the most wonderful atmosphere along with fantastic enclosures, beautiful animals and an amazing experience!

The staff were incredibly friendly and professional. This is a really fantastic place that is a must see for any animal lover.

There is just one thing I would like to be noted and that is in the Cafe they are still using plastic straws even though when you walk into the cafe there is a fish tank telling you how long certain plastic items take to degrade if at all - so looking for an alternative hopefully is on the agenda

We will definitely come back to this amazing Zoo - thank you to all staff and animals for giving us a great day xx

User

Had the best day at Dartmoor zoo today! The place is amazing! Fantastic enclosures, beautiful animals and an amazing experience!

I want to add that this place it ran by the most incredibly friendly and professional staff I have encountered. I massive thank you to Ben for signing my book and taking the time away from his lunch to talk to me, and a big thank you for all the hard working staff for giving me loads of information and entertainment during my visit! I shall 100% return again and again! This is a really fantastic place that is a must see for any animal lover and conservationist! A great business to support which supports wildlife!

Thanks again for an amazing day!!

User

Had a wonderful visit to Dartmoor on a very sunny Bank Holiday Monday. It was great to be able to be so close to these wonderful animals, and also to have the chance to handle some of the amazing exotics The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable, especially the very enthusiastic intern in the reptile department!! Thank you

User

BEST DAY OUT!!! Visited with my family today and I must say it was truly lovely and we will definitely be returning!! The animals are clearly very well looked after, the staff are fabulous and extremely helpful as well as very knowledgeable. All through the summer they are running a daily raffle to win an experience with one of the animals, and today we were extremely lucky to win today (an encounter with the wonderful Brown Bear Haley) I believe it's the only zoo in the south west that homes a bear and a jaguar!! Very well priced for what you get. Can't wait to come back!!!

User

Absolutely brilliant! The animals all look incredibly well cared for and have substantial enclosures. Staff and volunteers are very welcoming and friendly. Well worth the 6 hour round trip today I especially loved Chincha, Josie & Jaz and Carlos!
