As I drive down the lanes in my pickup, delivering to my customers, I see the trees are slowly starting to take on the shades of autumn. It won’t be long before we start lighting the fires at home and enjoying not just the warmth, but the sense of home a real fire creates. For some of my customers, their fire is the main or only source of heat in their homes. Michaelmas, or the Feast of Michael and All Angels, is celebrated on the 29th of September every year. This day is associated with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of days. The plants don’t need a calander to tell them they can now slow down and stop working so hard whilst the swifts and swallows gather ready to make the trip home. Lights are being turned on a little earlier every night and my partner is digging out her jumpers. My main aim this summer was to get th...e yard as stocked up as possible and I am very pleased to be working with a new supplier who runs a local forestry management business. This supplier manages change to the habitat of the birds animals and insects which will give them a guaranteed environment in the future. My new supplier has the same ethos as I do making a living working on the land, employing local people, harvesting timber and ensuring the forest they leave behind will thrive in the future. As the nights draw in and the temperatures fall our thoughts yet again turn to the colder months. This time of year not only brings shorter nights but hop picking, lifting the potatoes and the final weeks of work for the combine harvesters. As I was born in the Teme Valley these sights bring a comforting pattern to the year.
