Davies Fishmongers

Davies Fishmongers is a family run business now into its 5th generation. Originating from the old east end we buy fresh fish to a standard not a price.

The business - though not in its current form - was started by Steve's great grandfather Joe back in the 1870s on a fish stall in Broadway Market, Haggeston in East London.

Daily trips on horse and cart to the old Billingsgate Market in the city of London enabled Joe to buy the fish he needed for smoking and preparing in the yard at the family home in Whiston Road, Haggeston and for sale on the market stall. Joe's sons worked in the business, with Tommy his youngest, (Steves grandfather). The family moved to Hoxton, opening a stall in Hoxton market with the smoking and preparation being carried out in the yard at 58 Crondall Street Hoxton N. 1.

Tommy expanded the business to three stalls in the market and two Sunday shellfish outlets to accommodate the family's hard working ethics.

Tommy's youngest son Arthur (Steve's father) ran one of the stalls in the market (after completing his National Service in 1949) along with the Sunday enterprise.

From a very young age Steve was involved in the business, helping his father and grandfather. When he was 16 he was given the Sunday stalls to run while Arthur opened his shop in Church Lane, Leytonstone in 1972.

Steve joined his father at the Leytonstone shop and spent time gaining the skills and experience in order to expand the business by opening the Bakers Arms shop in 1976.

Daniel took over the running in 2013 and is well prepared to meet the new challenges of the future, with Steve still keeping his watchful eye on things.

So five generations of fishmongers (possibly a record?) is quite a pedigree we think.

As for the future? Well Daniel has a baby son - so watch this space.
