About Devon Sun Yarns

Luxury yarn retreats, yarn clubs, celebration gift boxes and gorgeous yarns. Relax, create and be inspired by gorgeous yarn!

Devon Sun Yarns Description

Welcome to Devon Sun Yarns, where we specialise in beautiful yarns, lovingly dyed and carefully packaged, and delivered to you to brighten your day! If you love yarn as much as we do, why not join us on the gorgeous Dorset coast for a weekend of yarn fun, relaxing, eating cake and dyeing yarn at a Yarn Retreat - we would love to meet you!

All these yarns are hand dyed in very small batches in my lovely home studio on the sunny East Devon coast. I use solar power for all my equipment, and the yarns are laid out in the sunshine to dry. Each skein of yarn is unique, due to the hand painting process. I use a combination of dyeing methods, and you can expect some flashing in your skeins, which make them truly unique. I love experimenting with colour combinations and often only dye one or two skeins in a particular colourway. I take inspiration from nature, the seasons and the beautiful coast around my home. I am happy to custom dye yarn for you - please just message me for details.

The best way to sample some yarn is to join the monthly yarn club where you get to enjoy gorgeous yarn and little extras too. Places are limited but please just message for more information.

Please make sure you order enough yarn for your project, and I recommend that on larger projects you alternate between skeins as no two skeins will be identical due to the hand dyed nature. I use professional, non toxic dyes and techniques which reduce the impact of these dyes on the environment.

Autumn colours are here! I’ve added a green dye to my range of dyes so you can get some gorgeous leafy greens at home too! All these colours were dyed using the green, orange and black dyes that you can buy on my website, and are safe to use at home with pets and children around. If there’s another colour you are waiting for please let me know! Which of these four is your favourite? I love the dark pumpkin colour.

User

Autumn is now officially here so I’m cracking out the autumn colours. I dyed these little mini skeins, using the new orange dye from my range of food safe dyes. These dyes can be used in your home kitchen and are safe to be used around pets and children. And, they make the most amazing colours! I love how a bright orange turns into the most wonderful pumpkin shade with just a hint of the black dye - both colours are available to buy on the website, and so are these cute mini skeins, 20g of sparkly perfection!

User

My fingers were freezing this morning when I left the house. Definitely glove weather! It reminded me I have these gorgeous skeins of chunky yarn to add to the shop update, they’ll be a preview sale over in my Facebook group later to day, so come over and join us if you aren’t already there. And if you have a favourite mitten pattern, please let me know!

User

Autumn has arrived in Devon! I’m cracking out the chunky Yarns, I’ve just done a shop update and there’s a few more to add later too. Do you like using autumn colours for your autumn projects or do you stick with colour? I quite like the idea of some bright accessories, this pink is one of the new colours in the update this week. What do you think?

User

I hope it’s this pretty when it’s finished!! Dyeing with natural dyes is so much fun, it’s so special when you have grown the dye, made the dye stock and then dyed the yarn. But, I’m still learning so I have no idea how this one will turn out, or if this colour will stick around. I’m guessing it will actually come out a very pale lilac grey but I won’t know for a few days. Any guesses as to what made this amazing dye stock?

User

I’ve been trying some new things this year. One of them is growing and harvesting my own dyes. These wonderful dahlias were grown by my son, and I used a few of the wonderful heads to dye these amazing shades of yellow, mustard, and grey. It’s quite amazing that so many shades came from just one plant. I’ve dyed enough for something quick and chunky for now, and something that’s part of a bigger longer project too so I’m really looking forward to working with these Yarns through the summer. A little bit of summer sunshine for the cold winter days! Don’t worry, I’m not switching over to flower power for the dyes, but it’s lovely to work on something new too.

User

This is one of my favourite sock blanks, in the speckle rainbow colourway, so I’m so pleased that @sandyparleknits decided to cast on as soon as she bought it! Do you stash for later or get started straight away?

User

We had rain all weekend here! All day and all night, it just didn’t seem to stop. But this morning, the sunshine is back, the sky is blue again and we have been rewarded with green everywhere! The garden, the grass and the fields have all suddenly come to life , and it reminded me of this bright green yarn I dyed back in the spring. I love dyeing yarn blanks, so I’ve added a few more choices to the website in different weights ( including DK which I’m really excited about! Gradient cowls all round this autumn!)

User

I’ve had lots of requests for undyed yarn in heavier weights so I’m adding lots of new bases to the website today. They’ll be Aran weight superwash merino like this lovely yarn dyed at a yarn retreat last year. It’s bouncy and soft and so great for beginners to dye as it takes the colours beautifully. What colours would you go for?

User

Tiny little confetti sprinkles - I love this kind of pretty yarn and it’s so lovely to see it working up. Thank you @soul.knit.sew for sharing this photo of your knitting and using the #devonsunyarns

Sock blanks. They are the thing I love most about handdyed yarn , because they just look so beautiful before they are used. I especially love this one with a splattered rainbow but I know it’s hard for people to imagine what they look like when they are worked up. I’m working on a little guide to help with that, as these are just too good not to be used straight away!
What do you think about sock blanks? Love them or not so sure yet? Let me know.

So it looks like our little heat wave has come to an end, or at least is having a break this weekend. It’s started raining here, but still feels warm. And whilst I don’t mind the rain ( the fields need it!) I was hoping to see the lunar eclipse tonight and it’s cloudy! So, instead I’m going to plan some big winter projects, and I’m thinking maybe this year I’ll tackle a jumper. I prefer small projects and ones where fit doesn’t matter too much, so this will be a real challenge for me. What about you? Do you have any challenging projects on the go?
This Hot Pink is part of the summer sale, and would make the most amazing contrast yarn in a shawl or for really fun socks. Just pop me a message if your stash needs an injection of pink!

User

Do you still love yarn in the summer? I’m a big summer fan, but even I would quite like a little breeze and some rain overnight please! I still love wool in the summer though, and always have a little portable project in my bag for a few rows at the park or on the beach. Socks are perfect for that but I’m thinking about starting a little motif blanket too so i can work on motifs whilst out and about. What about you? What are your favourite summer projects?

User

Do you have a favourite style of hand dyed yarn? It’s something I often get asked, and this marbled style is probably my favourite. The way you can have so many different shades blending together is mesmerising and I love that every skein will be completely individual. It’s also my favourite style to dye as well. What’s your favourite style?

User

These colours - I feel like these are my summer yarn colours, but I’m trying to think about autumn colours and knitting some gloves in rich, dark tonnes for winter. I feel all discombobulated 😂 Is it just me, that themes their knitting to the season? Maybe that’ll be my excuse for not having my winter woolies ready for when this summer finally makes way for autumn!
This is a single ply Merino, in sock weight and it’s so curly and bouncy I absolutely adore it! This little summer selection are the last of the summer Yarns and are on sale now, find them over in my Facebook group or just message me here. EDIT. ALL SOLD

User

Self striping sock yarn. Is there anything more magical? These little balls might look like sweeties but let me tell you, there is nothing sweet about the effort that goes into dyeing them not to mention making them look like this! Because they are so labour intensive, I don’t make very many and these are my last three for a while. If you want one, speak up now! They are in the summer sale at £15 each, just let me know here which one you’d like.
