We had a very charming guest today at DC1. All she could talk about was the first ever Mermade Seaside Festival in Eastbourne from 1st to 23rd September 2018 A fun, creative Community event for Devonshire West Seaside area. Where is it? Area covered is from the corner of Terminus road and Seaside Road, to corner of Whitley Road and Seaside. Includes Marine Parade and Royal Parade on the seafront. What is it? ... A visual trail of sculptures in window displays/pavement displays of Mermaids, Mermen or other sea creatures, created mainly from plastic waste and recycling, by local businesses and residents. There will be a creative workshop on how to build your mermaid/sculptures/creatures for a display on 19th August at Leaf Hall, plus story telling and talks at the main exhibition of 'Plastic Ocean' in DC3, 1-5 Seaside, on 18th-23 September. What is it about? To create awareness of the amount of plastic that is polluting our marine environment, to encourage people to use less plastic in their lives whenever possible, to encourage people to take part in the Big Beach Clean of 14th-17th September, run by the Marine Conservation Society, and to raise awareness of the work they do, and local group Plastic Free Eastbourne. Who takes part? Businesses and house holds in the Devonshire West area above are challenged to create a Mermaid, Merman, or other sea creature/s, made from their plastic rubbish; bottles, bags, cutlery, straws, cups, food wrap etc. and to display it in their window or outside their property, for the duration of the festival. For inspiration, see Tania Long FantaSea Art with a Heart on face book ,Plastic Ocean photos, or www.spanglefish.com/fantaseaart/seaofoila ndtrees The Main Event of the Festival is the 'Plastic Ocean' Exhibition 18th-23rd September At DC3 Workshop space, 1-5 Seaside,Eastbourne
