Upon request by a few Day Guests and Residents we decided to make a cake together. Anne S was the leader, and was telling us what the ingredients were and how to prepare everything. We had lots of reminiscence chats during the cooking session. Each one of them had a story to tell Anne S said she used to make cakes three times a week usually plain vanilla cake. Barbara said her favorite is a cupcake and she said every time she makes them she burns a couple of them. The smell of the cakes baking was delicious and everyone was looking forward to having the cake with their afternoon tea.

David and Evelyn enjoy playing snakes and ladders together. David said he always gets angry when he throws and gets number one on the dice. He said the reason he loses is because he likes to let Evelyn win.

Day Guests, as well as Residents of the Devonshire, continue to enjoy all the various activities in the Day Centre. Every day is busy, fun and our daily afternoon tea in our Devonshire Lyons Tea Room is still the highlight of the day. Veronica loves her green-house and enjoys watering all the plants. She is an avid gardener and her knowledge about plants is amazing. She instructs our gardener and handyman daily. Day Guests Barbara P, Barbara F and Evelyn continue to enjoy p...articipating in activities particularly the parachute exercise and chair football. David said, “ It’s always good to be with good people and I am happy here, everyone is so nice.” Gerald made a comment about the foot spa, “ It feels like being on holiday." Brenda B loves knitting and is making gloves. Veronica has been instructing staff on how to make delicious gravy with oxo cubes.

A Letter From A Guests Relative
'Dear Devonshire Dementia Day Centre,
I am writing to you as I would like you to know that since Mum has been attending your day centre her mood and behaviour have improved greatly. She seems to be a lot happier and calmer when she returns home. Even her sense of humour seems to be returning and it is nice to see her smile again. If she is having a bad day at home it does not last long and it’s made both my and my husband’s role as carers a lot... easier. It also gives us some respite time to recharge our batteries so we can continue with our carer’s role.
Thank you and kind regards' Mrs. Christine McGoldryck

Thank you to everyone ~ our neighbors, passers-by and our community for taking the time to send messages to us to express your appreciation for our Christmas lights and Umbrella Installations. It is such a pleasure to know that it was appreciated and made a difference to all of you. We created the Christmas lights this year partly to shine a light on awareness and create hope about dementia but also to say THANK YOU to our community as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary year of caring for people living with dementia in this community.
We wish we could keep our lights of hope up all year round!!

We continue to get together every Wednesday morning with families and people who live with dementia from the communities of Kingston, Wimbledon, Worcester Park, and Richmond. Guests and families say ‘We have a blast from the past’, ‘Some of us can’t even carry a note but we have coffee and some scrumptious treat the Cook has whipped up for us, we chat and then sing.’ If we have a huge turnout we split into two groups. One group moves to the Day Centre where all the Day Guests... love joining in. The other group stays in the upstairs lounge where the Dispensary is housed. Singing is great fun and research shows singing in groups increases endorphins and oxytocin in the brain which promotes good health, communication, and creativity! People that sing together experience happiness and research show their hearts synchronize and magically beat together!

Day Guests of the Devonshire Dementia Day Center and Residents of Devonshire Dementia Care Home with families and staff bundled in their overcoats and hats in the front of the buildings to see the new Christmas lights.
First, the Care Home building lit up and Residents were delighted by the beautiful display. Care Manager Vanessa decided she wanted to light up the building to bring joy to the neighborhood because it’s what we try and do at the Devonshire and raise awareness of Dementia. Many neighbors have telephoned to say how lovely the lights look. One neighbor asked where Santa was!!!
