Hello, this is Daisy, a 6 year old, papillon/dachshund/chihuahua mix. She was diagnosed when she was just 3 months old, which is extremely rare for a dog (normally they get it after age 9). Her owner is also Type 1 and has had it for about 15 years. She was the one that recognized Daisy’s symptoms. - When Daisy was just diagnosed, she was not doing well, and the vet bills were piling up. It was very expensive to do glucose curves with the vet to figure out her dosage, and the... vet even sent Daisy home with a catheter in her paw just in case we wanted to come back to euthanize her because she didn’t think Daisy would survive. - Instead, her type 1 owner took her home, bought a glucometer, and worked with a different vet to do our own glucose curves to figure out the correct insulin and dosage that would work with Daisy. - Today, Daisy has beaten the odds and is a thriving, healthy pup. She doesn’t mind her 2 shots per day or her blood sugar checks, and is actually happy to do them. She’s an amazing type 1 diabetic dog and has been an inspiration to the type 1 community, especially for young children who are newly diagnosed.
