Doctors, nurses, paramedics and all health staff are human beings. We regularly see the best and the worst that humanity throws at us and provided emotions do not affect our performance and decision making, we think it is ok to join patients on their journey through the good and the bad.

Hearts can be seen everywhere we look today on Valentine’s Day, but did you know that the month of February is National Heart Month in the UK?
We often hear reports in the news giving us advice on the things we should be doing to keep our heart healthy, and in a busy world it can seem like a daunting task to keep up with. So why is it so important? Heart and Circulatory Disease cause a quarter (25%) of all deaths in the UK. Coronary Heart Disease is the most common type of H...eart and Circulatory Disease, and it occurs when a build up of fatty material in the walls of the coronary arteries cause them to narrow. With narrowed arteries, the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart can be reduced. This fatty material can break off and cause a blood clot that blocks the blood flow to the heart and result in a heart attack. There are lots of lifestyle factors that increase our risk of Cardiovascular Disease, including Coronary Heart Disease, and just a few simple changes can lower your risk.
Here are our Top Healthy Heart Lifestyle Tips:
β€’ Stop smoking – smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease β€’ Be more active – doing more physical activity can reduce your risk of heart disease, and is also good for reducing your stress too! β€’ Maintain a healthy weight – being overweight increases your risk of heart disease β€’ Cut down on saturated fat – consuming too many fatty foods increases your cholesterol level, which increases your risk of heart disease β€’ Eat your 5 a day fruit and vegetables for essential vitamins and minerals β€’ Reduce your salt intake – excess salt intake can lead to high blood pressure, which increases your risk of heart disease β€’ Reduce your alcohol consumption – alcohol is high in calories and can contribute to weight gain β€’ Eat more fish and fibre – oily fish is a good source of omega-3 which may protect against heart disease, and eating enough fibre also helps to lower your risk of heart disease
By following a good diet plan and having regular exercise, you too can drastically reduce your risk of heart disease!
