About Dionne Swift : Textile Artist

I'm a Textile Artist translating my view of the world into cloth. I run a range of creative workshops to inspire and enthuse!

Dionne Swift : Textile Artist Description

I am intrigued by a certain energy in a space or composition - be it an urban or rural landscape, I can be caught by a block of colour, a particular structure, a subtle shadow, a sense of place or unspoken energy.

Several years ago when I moved into a new studio my work took a particular turn to a more painterly direction. Since then I’ve focused my time, drawing the landscape then exploring stitch and thread qualities as a drawing medium. I sew with energy, speed and vitality. I race and run away with myself losing hours in front of my machine.
I mix colour on the surface of the cloth - I like to think of it as tactile pointillism : blending thread colours and tones as the stitches entwine. Often I’ll build up multiple layers of thread giving a dense matted surface where the cloth has been smothered and stitches command attention.

I want to offer energetic and intense embroidery that challenges traditional parameters

Award winning Textile Artist: Dionne Swift is a graduate of Goldsmith’s College, she has a Masters in Textiles from UCE, Birmingham and has over 26 years of creative practice experience. Now based in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, she exhibits and tutors internationally.

This Developing Sketchbooks online workshop commences on Monday 4th February 201 [finishes 17th February 2019] and consists of a series of emails, videos and blogs which will guide you through the development of a sketchbook. By the end of the workshop you’ll have a full & jam packed book full of ideas and techniques which you can refer back to again and again.
Explore a series of easy and exciting practical exercises which you can add to any design project – they’ll help you... develop imagery and are key elements to any sketchbook.
Here’s an overview of the areas we’ll cover:
Lose the fear: starting a new book is full of woes, let me show you how! The essential ingredients. No panic drawing/observation Found and abstracted Cut and enhance Repeat and play Review There's a supplies list on my website/workshop booking page – to be honest I’m going to guess you’ll have most of it hanging around.
Information will be sent to you over a 7 day period, but you will have access to the password protected blog/videos etc for 2 weeks, so you can take your time and re-watch videos as required. [you will need suitable computer based skills to access information – answering emails, engaging on blogs, uploading images.] So that you truly engage in the workshop environment I success you set definite time aside for yourself to create – after all if this were the studio version you would spend a complete day engrossed in creativity – give yourself that time!
Online interaction with your fellow students is very beneficial and this will be a key point of contact and feedback: there is a private Facebook group where you can share images of your results.
"Thank you Dionne for another spectacular course. I don’t think I have ever enjoyed on-line classes as much as yours, for content, for inspiration, for your considered, considerable and considerate on-line presence and for the way we have all made such great connections. It’s been great feeling a part of such a wonderful community."
A comparable studio workshop would be £70- £80 per day, plus your travel and accommodation costs on top : this is 14 days!!! Learning online represents significant savings and can offer you more time to full absorb the information.
I look forward to working with you. Dionne

Just finished Dionne's 'Developing Sketchbooks' course online. Dionne is a positive and inspiring teacher, who is genuinely interested in her students. The activities are non-threatening, but once mastered can be extended to help generate ideas around any theme. The Facebook group was also a positive experience, especially for someone like me who was previously not on Facebook.

I've enjoyed the course so much that I have already enrolled for her next court 'Drawing for Textiles'.

I've just finished the online Machine Embroidery course with Dionne and found it excellent - well-organised, informative and with loads of supportive back-up from Dionne herself and the rest of the Facebook group. I'd have no hesitation in recommending it to any other interested person. Thanks, Dionne - keep on doing what you're doing!

Drawing for Textiles was my first online course with Dionne, and I can thoroughly recommend it. She is an inspiring teacher and provides a fantastic amount of food for thought, which lasts well beyond the timespan of the instruction. Plenty of material and plenty of encouragement make it a wonderful experience. Thank you Dionne!
