Does the appointment of the new Doctor Who suggest that female job applicants are finally being treated fairly? All we’ll say is that it’s over 40 years since sex discrimination in the workplace was outlawed. Unfortunately for lots of working people, equal opportunities is still science fiction…

"It’s amazing than any employer in the 21st century would require a female job applicant to take a pregnancy test! As well as being an invasion of privacy, this practice suggests an intention to discriminate unlawfully against women on the grounds of pregnancy.
If there are genuine health reasons why a pregnant woman should not undertake certain duties at work, she can be offered other suitable duties. In the last resort, she can be suspended on health grounds.
She certainl...y can’t be denied the offer of a job because she is pregnant." - Julia Beasley, Head of Employment at Burroughs Day Solicitors.
"We act for individuals who are discriminated against because they are pregnant, have been on maternity leave or have young children. Please get in touch with Burroughs Day to discuss your case and find out more."

We applaud the latest ruling on gay widows’ and widowers’ pension rights. The Supreme Court has rightly ruled that gay couples are entitled to receive the same survivors’ pension rights as heterosexual married couples. (This will be achieved by disapplying the rule in the Equality Act 2010 that allows pension providers to ignore contributions from before 2005 - the year the Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force). - Julia Beasley, Head of Employment law, Burroughs Day Solicitors.
