Dorking Caves on TV!
The Rocket
Tuesday 6th August at 9pm on BBC4.
... The episode they filmed in the caves was focussing on the invention of dynamite and so was trying to replicate the interior of a Chinese mine. The crew had to avoid the emergency lighting that we have in the caves and were looking for a section that was pure sandstone without any of the Victorian additions of wine bins that the caves are famous for.
The crew were self sufficient in terms of lighting and sound and of course cameras, which is just as well as there is no electricity in the caves other than the lighting circuit. We were introduced to the presenter of the programme who in this case is Jim Al-Khalili. Jim is a British theoretical physicist, author and broadcaster. He is Professor of Theoretical Physics and Chair in the Public Engagement in Science at the University of Surrey. He is a regular broadcaster and presenter of science programmes on BBC radio and television, and is a frequent commentator about science in other British media. He was also a really friendly and we were impressed by how easily he was able to read and remember and then deliver a script! A true professional.
