About Dotty Bobbin

Dotty Bobbin is a sewing school in Hemel Hempstead teaching children and adults of all ages and abilities.

Dotty Bobbin Description

Hello my name is Saskia and I love everything homemade! I got my first sewing machine when I was about 7 years old (now I am 40! ) and that is when my mother taught me to sew. I started making pencil cases which I sold to my classmates, then aprons and so on. Since then I have been sewing in one form or another almost every day of my life. A new era in sewing for me came when someone kindly gave me an industrial overlocking machine, which opened up a new world of sewing for me. More recently I have purchased a dedicated embroidery machine which is just amazing. In between all of these delights I have also learnt to do upholstery and I undertake small upholstery commissions.
I teach affordable sewing and upholstery to both adults and children from age 5. I run courses during weekends and school holidays, and have an ongoing drop in class three times a week.
I offer specialised upholstery pieces combining embroidery and upholstery, mostly vintage or upcycled fabric, particularly sewing boxes, buttoned ottomans, and buttoned chairs.
I run a sewing club at Two Waters Primary School, where children from reception upwards are taught to use a sewing machine.
I undertake embroidery commissions, from personalised hoodies to special one off wedding gifts.

Hello, can I ask for confirmation of numbers for who will be attending on the 19th May for Lesley’s farewell get together. I was proposing 2pm at my house. A couple people can’t make it anymore so I just want to see if we have enough people xx thanks

Yay back to classes after an Easter break. Tonight we have Annelies and Talullah working on french Seams, welt seams and Hong Kong finish seams for their course. We have two ladies trying out the overlockers for the first time. Paul is working on some lines blinds for his son’s bedroom and the rest I will discover tonight.
Don’t forget I am starting my secondary school course next Monday for teenagers wanting to learn to sew and bridge that gap at school. Annelies is really enjoying the home learning course and we will be working on that a lot. I’d recommend it to any budding fashion designers.

Ok who’s with me? Old bed sheets, net curtains, fabric scraps to make reusable produce bags to help reduce plastic in our environment. Anyone work for Sainsbury’s or Tesco? We could make hundreds of these and give them away for a charity donation in stores if they would let us. 🤔

Broken down again in the car waiting for services to rescue me. What else is there to do other than admire my daughters lovely fabrics purchased this morning!

The most precious photos from Yasmin’s first ever sewing project. Doesn’t she look fabulous. Yasmin came to me with a pattern labelled easy beginners! Well it had pin tucks, collar, bias binding, zip, set in sleeves, elastic and more! Don’t trust the description! But she persevered and finished it and it’s beautiful x well done

Some inspiration for you. This lady is self taught and had only been sewing for 3 years when she made these. 😍

A few gems from Thursdays class this week.

Ladies and gents can you pass on this message to your secondary schools in Hemel. Apparently so far it’s only reached one school in Hemel. I’m sure there are many kids that would benefit.
Thanks xxx

It’s official. I am one of three seamstresses who are offering their time for free to alter prom dresses for this charity. Kids who would otherwise not be able to go to prom as they can’t afford it. Hope they don’t leave it all until the last week! 🤪. Get liking their page and remember if you have any dresses in your cupboard you no longer wear you can donate to these guys xx
