About Dr Jenner'S House, Museum And Garden

The home of Edward Jenner, the birthplace of vaccination

Dr Jenner'S House, Museum And Garden Description

Dr Jenner's House, Museum and Garden is the former home of Dr Edward Jenner and the birthplace of vaccination. Jenner was born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, in 1749 and after training to be a surgeon with John Hunter in London he returned to his home town to practice as the local surgeon. He purchased The Chantry in 1785 and lived here until his death in 1823. Dr Jenner had a plethora of interests from geology, music, poetry and natural sciences all of which are presented in the museum. He was made a Fellow of The Royal Society for his work on the nesting habits of cuckoos, however he is most famous for his pioneering experiment proving that immunity to cowpox also provided immunity to smallpox. It created vaccination and changed medical science forever, paving the way for the eventual eradication of the deadly smallpox in 1980. It is still the only human disease ever to have been completely eradicated. His research founded the science of Immunology and his enthusiasm for scientific enquiry and boundless energy to advocate his discoveries makes him a true local, national and international hero.

An ode to the museum team. (with apologies to a much greater poet, Edward Jenner, MD.)
They gathered together, one and all, Welcomed into the great Doctor’s house.... The excitement rose for this revel, this ball; And the rain could not their spirits dowse. The scene was set, the guests of great esteem. For this party celebrated the Dr Jenner’s House team.
‘Twas a prize much deserved, for their time they do give. Those in the garden who work amongst eglantine; Some in the office who’ll sort paper like a sieve. And the welcomers. The welcomers who make many a visit shine. A golden year it’s been, And all because they’ve been keen.
So we hope you do see that a social bunch are we. But our team’s incomplete, there’s a whole host of space. So if you’ve time spare and can work a PC, Or can chat with the best and be that friendly face, Head down to Berkeley, not a moment to lose. The awful rhyming, we hope you’ll excuse.
...
Honestly, it's not always like this. Volunteers really make the place come alive, we simply couldn't open without them. And as members of our Welcome Team take their summer breaks, we are particularly keen to say hello to new faces who will be able to greet our visitors. No experience or prior knowledge necessary, ideally you just need to like people! Find out more at https://jennermuseum.com/support/#volunte er or pop in and see us when the museum is open.

Our selection of wonderful things made by fabulous people is gradually growing. Alongside science gifts, toys and books, we’re now really pleased to be selling items from some of our favourite local crafters, starting with Yasmin Jones Cards and Ye Green Men. Yasmin’s cards have been practically flying off the shelves today! Our shop is open whenever the museum is and is completely free to browse (although we'd love it if you also paid to look round the house).

⚠️ VISITOR UPDATE (17/7/19) ⚠️
It's a glorious day and our car park is very busy. If you do find that we are full when you arrive alternative free public car parking is available in Berkeley, no more than a 5 minute walk away, on either side of Marybrook Street.
Last admission today is at 4pm and we expect the number of cars to ease throughout the day. If you do park in the museum car park please only use spaces marked for visitors, take care not to block any other cars in and refrain from parking immediately in front of the house. Thank you.

If you've visited this week, you might have met Zoe, who has been here on work experience. We asked Zoe to sum up her week:
"The past week of work experience at Dr Jenner's House has definitely surprised me to say the least. I didn’t expect so much to go on behind the scenes and never really considered how much work and time goes into sustaining a museum and the collections it holds. One of the most enjoyable experiences for me was going into the attic and seeing what it used... to be like for people in Jenner’s time who would’ve stayed there, although I can’t quite imagine, being a 15 year old girl of this day and age, how soldiers and families survived with so little to live with. I find the Temple of Vaccinia really interesting and different as it was originally built as a summer house but then Jenner changed its use and decided to vaccinate and treat local people in it. I also find it cool that the Temple of Vaccinia is in Historic England's top 100 listed buildings of all time and I can see why, as Jenner truly did make his mark in history. “The home of the country doctor…who changed the world” sums up Dr Jenner's House well and I especially like that Edward Jenner remained a country doctor and kept himself local to his birthplace."
Thank you Zoe for being such a great member of the team this week!
