This was my my Major Project work completed during my third year of Derby University.
The problem I set out to solve was to design and develop a new type of airsoft weapon that would solve many issues with current products, whilst still functioning like a regular airsoft weapon. The airsoft gun is based around a version 2 M4A1 gearbox, but with many improvements to the external components. The new design includes several exciting new and existing features and is designed to b...e as user friendly as possible. The gun is ergonomically designed to reduce strain on the player during long games, increase overall user comfort and has a futuristic, alien looking style to it. In summary the product will add a new type of gun class to the sport and may even inspire more futuristic guns. This styling and idea suggests a new direction for the airsoft industry that could inspire a new group of airsoft players, similar to speedsoft and milsim players, and could in turn develop new game types, future themed events and other futuristic based products. Inspiration came from several media sources (films, television series, video games, books, magazines etc) to enable me to design a product that has aesthetic qualities which give the required connotations.

This was one of the briefs set during my third year of Derby University. The assignment was to design a single seating unit for use in a reception area, specifically the reception area in Derby University Markeaton Street Building that could also be appropriate for similar buildings. The resulting piece of furniture should have a maximum footprint of 550mm x 700mm and should be capable of offering a comfortable experience for up to 45 minutes, for 90% of the UK adult population. The structure of the seat must be constructed from ¾” mild steel tube, other than that the design is open to the designer’s interpretation. 12mtr of tube from which to construct a prototype, will be allocated to the designer, along with a 800mm x 1220mm sheet of 12mm thick plywood. Beyond that, use any other materials that the designer sees fit.

This was one of the briefs set during my third year of Derby University. The assignment was based my what my entry would be for the RSA Student Design Awards competition.
“Each year the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts (RSA) runs a programme of awards aimed at design students. The RSA Student Design Awards is a global curriculum and annual competition for students and recent graduates run by the Royal Society of Arts (the RSA), a globally renowned registered charit...y committed to finding innovative, practical solutions to social problems. Our goal is to empower a generation of savvy, employable designers who understand the potential of design to benefit society.” Out of the 12 available briefs, I chose to do the Project Rural Brief. The problem I aimed to solve through development of an innovative new product, was the problem of crime within rural communities in particular vehicle crime. After researching into this area, I decided to focus on quad bikes being stolen from people living in rural communities, most commonly farmers. This is a huge problem in these areas and is statistically in the top three most commonly stolen vehicles from farmers.

Developed some of the airsoft products further, including a new rifle concept, new pistol concept, and a new airsoft gadget. Updates will follow as the sketches progress. Also experimenting with digital sketching on a tablet, so depending on the quality of the digital work I may also post this up too.

This was one of the briefs set during my second year of Derby University. The task was to come up with; an initial design concept, 3D SoildWorks CAD model and a full 1:1 scale working prototype that has all the finishes and tactility that the product would have if it was to be sold. The project was to design a folding lab/workshop stool that could be used in the wood workshop and then be collapsed down when not in use. The stool would have to accommodate 90% of the target mar...ket if possible 90% of the population of the country, and needed to suit the target markets ergonomic, anthropometric and visual needs. For my design I kept the shape simple and sleek meaning that it was easy to router the parts if they become damaged and used removable fixings so everything can be disassembled for recycling or to replace a part. My design also has three foot rests to accommodate the 5%tile, 50%tile, and 95% student meaning that no matter what height the person is or how long their legs are the majority of people can sit comfortably on the stool.
