... SONGLINES MAGAZINE “Human Nature is a masterpiece of an album.”
RIDDIM MAGAZINE "With astonishing guest appearances from Johnny Clarke, Michael Prophet and Linval Thompson the standard is high indeed. …arguably the best yet from Soothsayers and is therefore very heartily recommended."

With a roller-coaster career spanning over 35 years; from their beginnings on the underground club scene, to their appearance on the biggest selling soundtrack of all time, ‘Dirty Dancing’, to their latest studio album, 'The Wild River' and beyond, The Blow Monkeys maintain an eternal presence in the world of music.
Countless chart singles such as worldwide classics, “Digging Your Scene” and, “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way”, epitomised the glamour of mid-80's pop at its mos...t graceful and sophisticated, leading them to work with artists as varied as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Cheb Khaled and even Jamaican Toaster EEK-a-Mouse.
But it's their relentless desire to move forward, to collaborate and to be socially engaged that has contributed to their longevity as a band; continually making new music and always stretching the boundaries.
Reformed in 2008 The Blow Monkeys have released possibly their finest work yet, “The Wild River”. Their fifth album since reforming, they are now joined by ex Galliano stickman, Crispin Taylor, on drums. Reinvigorated and recharged; their live show is soulful, funky and smart.
After two incredible shows at The Duke that had us all talking for weeks, it's with greatest pleasure we welcome The Blow Monkeys back to Whitstable on this special Bank Holiday weekend.

Guyanese-born Richard Bailey started his drumming career in Trinidad at the age of nine, sitting in on percussion, drums and bass with his elder brother Robert's group, ’Osibisa’ - the top band in Trinidad and Tobago.
By sixteen, he was recording and touring the UK and USA with Johnny Nash and Bob Marley. By eighteen, he had recorded Jeff Beck's biggest selling album, “Blow By Blow”, to critical acclaim, and appeared on the film soundtrack, “Tommy”, alongside Pete Townsend,... Phil Chen and Roger Daltrey.
The next decade saw many recordings. Two world tours with Billy Ocean and Basia and a firm position in the drumseat with the British acid jazz/rock/soul fusion collective “INCOGNITO”.
More recently he has been an integral part of Steve Winwood's two important return-to-form recordings, 'About Time' and last year's 'Nine Lives'.
His versatility has made him a first-call kitman for four decades, and it's an enormous pleasure every time he plays at The Duke.

Some years after the demise of the Small Faces, Ronnie Lane decided to form a band as a platform for his great song-writing skills. That band was Slim Chance.
Since 2010, Slim Chance, ‘reformed but unrepentant’, have forged an excellent reputation around the country, playing Ronnie’s songs with passion, skill and commitment.
In 2004 the band played alongside Paul Weller, Pete Townshend, Ronnie Wood, Chris Jagger & Mick Jones to celebrate Ronnie’s music at the Albert Hall. ...The following year they were back to celebrate Leadbelly, along with Eric Burdon, Billy Bragg, Van Morrison and co.
As well as classics such as “Ooh La La”, “Debris”, “How Come” and “The Poacher”, the band also include many of their new songs in their sets, further establishing themselves as an entity in their own right.
**This will be a ticketed event. Available from September from The Duke**

'With influences from Johnny Burnette to Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Wanda Jackson to Imelda May, Bamboozle are a truly rocking band to dance the night away to.
Being one of the only bands to have a gal on vocals and rockabilly slap bass, a world class pedal steel player, two of the scenes top rockabilly guitarists and drummers, and mesmerising four part harmonies, Bamboozle are the band to see!'

Passionate about jazz and the style of the 1910's hot speakeasy, New Orleans Swamp Donkeys are a diverse group of young musicians playing traditional 'Jass', Blues and Vaudeville with original music and modern jazz adaptations.
Starting in the authentic Louisiana grassroots music scene, playing local festivals and second lines, they transitioned quickly into performing at world-class music events and have now played festivals and concerts all over the globe.
Their sound is f...amiliar; the Louis Armstrong tones of their soulful and sweet vocalist, James Williams are apparent, yet their music is exceptionally modern and progressive.
Featuring an all-star cast of bright musicians, The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys bring a diverse sound and appearance to the stage, with members hailing from around the USA and the world.
This gig is free. Tell all your friends about this show!

We stayed for one night and absolutely loved it. Great room , clean, bright and great size. Sarah was so welcoming and let us have a late check out as the room hadn't been booked the following night. We were able to leave our bags and explore the lovely surroundings. Will definitely be back.. we hear Sundays are pretty good! Nikki & Paul XXX

User

Spent a Sunday afternoon at Dukes. Terrific place. Warm atmosphere. Excellent drinks.

User

My family just ate dinner here this evening. Your staff couldn't have been more accommodating for our slightly fussy family! The food was excellent and perfectly seasoned (them chips though) and the brownie was divine. Even when our table had a bit of an accident we were cared for completely. Unfortunately I never got the dude who served us name, please give him our thanks and tell him he is super awesome! (In fact, tell all your staff that).

We will definitely be eating here again and enjoying the great laughs!

Thank you for a wonderful evening!!

User

A Pub with Passion for great, live, original music, (I know that bands from all over the world love playing there), with a rocking atmosphere and a management and staff who care, really care.

User

Nice pub. Lovely 😊 beer garden eaten there too xx sun trap in the afternoon

User

Be nice if they ever pick up the ' phone. Puts one off a place if they don't want ones business. !!!

User

Has the potential to be a great venue but the PA let's it down, the sound quality is terrible and as Jungle Brothers set went on the feedback got worse, spend the money upgrade the PA and the engineer.. 3* is being a bit generous to be honest but the potential is there...

User

Well.....we had to wait outside for over and hour or go to another pub because Macka-B was stuck in traffic. We went back and had to wait outside again because the PA system was broken. The crowd wanted to go it....the Landlord was confrontational with an attitude that would indicate he's in the wrong business. .....no people skills at all!! The band came on at 10.45.....toilets were disgusting...bar staff did their job nothing beyond the call of pulling a pint. ....smiles absent...won't be going back unless a nuclear bomb was dropped and it was the nearest shelter!!!

User

Sort the PA out!! No point in getting the likes of The Jungle Brothers if the sound is going to be that muddy

User

Have been to the Dukes many times in the past, but on Friday we went to see Makka B who was over two and a half hours late to come on stage. We only managed to stay for 3 songs and then had to leave due to work commitments. My partner has messaged the Dukes three times since Friday and the messages have been seen, but no responses have been made. This is unacceptable and terrible customer service. If we ever get a response i will update.
