A year ago Andy Denholm, an army veteran from West Cornforth had an idea to launch a community project which would remember the men and boys from this county who died during World War 1. His aim was to gather 7,117 handmade poppies. The request for poppies was posted on social media sites and soon word spread across the world and what began as a local community project became a global commu...nity project with poppies arriving from across the world, far exceeding the original target. 19,240 poppies, all hand made were then attached to nets and the final piece which measured 6 metres by 8 metres was erected on scaffolding. Today I had the privilege of unveiling this quite incredible tribute which marks, commemorates and remembers the lives of all who fought and died on July 1st 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. It was a very special occasion, an amazing achievement , Wonderful to meet the members of "team Poppy" responsible for the sewing and to hear how much they had enjoyed contributing to and being part of the project, they really had fun. I wonder what their next challenge will be!!! Today was a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together, and works together. Congratulations to all involved. I'm so pleased i could join you today
