East-West Education (Ewe) Description

EWE is run as a social enterprise – trading goods whilst having a social impact. We work with partners in India to produce quality award-winning resources:

• The dress up clothes and dolls’ clothes and the wedding sets are made by young women in Bangalore who have previously been given a year’s free training in all aspects of tailoring. The cloth dolls, the Divali puppets, Chinese
New Year Kits, embroidered waistcoats and fashion dolls’ outfits are handcrafted by a marginalised village community near Chennai. All these young people are thus provided with fairly paid employment and in addition
are supported through healthcare, life skills classes and opportunities for further education or training.

• In the UK the products are designed by teachers for teachers to supplement the curriculum. EWE agrees with the authorities that in our present society, it is increasingly important for children to understand and appreciate each other's customs and traditions. Clothes are one visible aspect of culture. So playing with dolls in other costumes makes for familiarity for all children and raises the self esteem of the minority ethnic child, especially in the Nursery or Primary classroom.
