Today was the first of our Nutrition MOT consultation days and it couldnвАЩt have gone better.

As Christmas Day approaches we are busy buying and prepping food to enjoy and share with loved ones. The fridge is full to the brim. Full of indulgent, yummy treats and a few panic buys- just in case!!!

IвАЩve worked in the NHS for many years now and this time of year is always super busy. Beds are full, staff are extra stretched and the carparks are over flowing.
Spare a thought before you attend the hospital incase your issue can be dealt with by another avenue (see pic below for some good advice рЯСЗрЯПїprovided by the NHS)
... Can you believe one year I actually had an elderly patient who had been dropped off to A&E by their family just before Christmas so they didnвАЩt have to have them at home over the Christmas period as they were going on holiday! рЯШ± ItвАЩs not a hotel!!

Did you see the story on the BBC last week about SainsburyвАЩs starting to stock insects in their stores?
A company called Eat Grub are the first company to have this kind of produce stocked in a mainstream U.K. supermarket. They stock bbq crickets, mealworms, protein powders and more.
... So whatвАЩs the lowdown on these unusual foods?
рЯ¶Ч First of all these are only unusual to us, there are many countries around the world where insects are a normal part of the diet; in Asia and Central America itвАЩs pretty normal to find insects as bar snacks or street foods.
рЯМО Environment рЯМО
Environmentally they are far superior to our usual protein staples such as beef or pork. For every kg of insects produced compared to 1kg of beef:
рЯРЬ they use considerably less water: 1 litre of water compared to 22,000 litres рЯШ±
рЯРЫ they release far less greenhouse gas emissions: 1g compared to 2,850
рЯ¶Ч they need much less land for production: 15 square metres compared to 200.
в≠РпЄП Nutrition в≠РпЄП Nutritionally they are quite an interesting food as they pack a high protein punch but are also high in fibre which for a non plant based protein is very unusual.
рЯТѓ Per 100g: рЯТѓ
Up to 69g of protein. Compared to around 30g for chicken so over double the amount. However, arguably its much easier and cheaper (for us currently) to eat 100g of chicken! 100g of insects is 2 whole packets.
6.5g of fibre compared to almost none in beef, chicken or pork. We know that people in the U.K. are eating too little fibre so this could be an interesting way to increase our intakes!
They are also a pretty good source of vitamins, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids though the content will vary depending on what theyвАЩre fed during production.
ItвАЩs also important to know that anyone with a shellfish allergy may also be allergic to insects as well.
рЯСЕ Taste рЯСЕ
Personally I donвАЩt find it offensive eating them. I struggle with eating meat on occasion and donвАЩt see this as any different really!!
Having tried the plain mealworms, crickets and bbq crickets out of the packet the flavoured variety was definitely tastier. Crickets taste a bit like dry ryvita! I reckon if you cook them as recommended with some soy sauce and chilli powder in the oven with some olive oil until theyвАЩre crispy theyвАЩd make a good addition to salads, stir fries or some crunch on the top of a bowl of soup.
You can also use the protein powder with flour to make cakes, biscuits and other baked goods which IвАЩm planning to try for our work xmas afternoon tea! Cricket fairy cakes anyone?!!

The British Dietetic Association has released their вАШone blue dotвАЩ campaign, aiming to help people eat healthily in a more environmentally friendly way... itвАЩs a 9 step plan as follows (and is pretty similar to our post we put out a little while ago!:
The One Blue Dot nine point plan:
рЯНГ Reductions in red and processed meat to 70g per person per day (also recommended by the World Cancer Research Fund).
... рЯНГ Prioritising plant proteins such as beans, nuts, soya and tofu.
рЯНГConsuming fish from sustainable sources.
рЯНГ Moderating dairy consumption and using fortified alternatives where needed.
рЯНГ Focussing on wholegrain starchy foods.
рЯНГOpting for seasonal, locally sourced vegetables/fruit. Avoiding air freighted, prepacked, and prepared vegetables/fruit.
рЯНГ Reducing overconsumption of high fat, sugar, salt foods.
рЯНГ Making tap water and unsweetened tea/coffee the choice for healthy hydration.
рЯНГReducing food waste, especially of perishable fruit and veg by choosing tinned/frozen alongside seasonal fresh produce.

Sorry we've been a bit absent recently... we've both had LOTS going on in our lives! One major change for us both which is taking up lots of time is that we are both training for new positions within the NHS which is really exciting for both of us рЯШГ. . Becca is working in renal (kidneys) seeing patients that are having dialysis because their kidneys are no longer working. What does this mean from a dietitian's point of view? If your kidneys do not work your body can no longer... get rid of waste products from the blood. Some nutrients in the food we eat can start to build up and if they go too high can be dangerous for the heart and damaging for the veins and bones so Becca helps patients to adapt their diet to keep these nutrients within safe levels. Many people also no longer produce urine so fluid management is key to prevent too much fluid building up in the body. Renal is a really interesting area of dietetics and Becca is loving it! . Lucy is working within paediatrics clinics seeing patients with food allergies, faltering weight and gastrointestinal issues. Many children suffer from allergies to foods such as cow's milk, nuts, soy, wheat & gluten so it's vital that their parents (and they!) know how to avoid these foods whilst also ensuring they're eating a balanced diet with the correct amount of nutrients for healthy growth and development. Some babies and children also struggle to put on weight and some go through periods of being very fussy and restricting the food that they're eating which can be a very stressful time for parents. It's a total turnaround from working on critical care and Lucy is loving getting her teeth stuck into this new area. .
