Rain has fallen in Hull, not from heaven, but from the roof of a barn, and not to water any plants but just for people to play with. This was at Williams Den a new activity centre for natural play which will open late this Spring ( http://www.williamsden.co.uk).
We are collaborating with Touchwood play from Bristol to create the water play in the barn and the rain is a part of it. The rainmaker has a cascade of suspended stainless steel trays and the water falls in lines o...f droplet streams from tray to tray. The final tray has 2 lines of droplets falling 2 and a half meters to a shallow pool on the ground- here one can walk on stepping stones between the lines of rain drops.
One can also enjoy the cascade from a raised platform where there are handles to operate flaps in 2 of the trays - these make waves which can interact and affect the way the drops fall below in beautiful swaying movements.
As far as we know this is a first in the evolution of mankind and never before have human beings been able to physically play with the way rain falls!!!
The barn has a handpumped stream, a Flowstream Flowform sculpture , wooden channels and a flowtable to play in as well. We will have more video to share when the rest of the play features are completed and everything is fully commissioned.

Water in movement can behave in remarkable ways and simple experiments can reveal wonderful phenomena, Within the fluidity and elegance of harmonic flow archetypal forms arise which can also be seen in clouds, plant structures, bones, even in the stars.
We will explore these experiences in a process structured to develop our understanding and unfold meaning for us as individuals and for society.
Water is an amazing substance and just getting to know it better can be a rather interesting and enjoyable experience. The study can help develop an understanding of life as whole organisms rather than mechanisms, as well as stimulate artistic creativity in horticulture and agriculture

Although water appears mysterious in many ways it can also speak to us directly out of its own nature. What is needed to understand its language? What is its attraction and what does it require of us to allow us to understand its role in life? I hope we may gain some understanding in this workshop as well as enjoy the beauty and wonder of water in some breathtaking flow experiments.
Details: £50 including lunch and refreshments. For bookings and information please contact The Field Centre on 01453 367369.
