The final stage of the job was to take the car for MOT. It passed with flying colours and was collected by its owner, Ian to enjoy the rest of the summer.

I had new stainless steel braided brake hoses made up to help improve vehicle braking and at the same time the fuel lines were made to replace the old ones. The suspension was removed for cleaning and powder coating. New adjustable coilovers were fitted to front and rear to improve handling and stance of the vehicle.

Once all the work on the engine had been completed, along with new vacuum hoses and all hose clips swapped out for new, the engine and gearbox were installed back into the vehicle.

The engine block was cleaned and degreased and then painted with engine enamel. The cylinder head was refitted after all the work that had been done to it. A new cambelt, water pump and tensioners were fitted, along with new custom made braided stainless braided fuel hoses.

I removed the cylinder head as the head gasket was leaking and at this point, while the head was off, we decided to strip the head down and clean and lap in all the valves with new seals and begin the long process of polishing and porting the head to give the engine better performance.

While the engine was out the engine bay was cleaned and detailed.

I realise I haven't finished the Lotus 'transformation' story but I have been busy with other projects, one of which has been to fabricate and fit a rear winch assembly to my truck. This will be really useful for me when recovering vehicles on my own as it has a remote control. I can make this winch to suit anybody's needs.

The next stage was to take the engine and transmission out as we decided that as there were so may issues to sort this would be the easiest option. I fabricated a frame so the front suspension could also be removed for refurbishment.

One of the major faults with the car was the electrical system. The factory alarm had to be removed as the system had failed and the earthing system needed overhauling. As you can see a fair amount of the vehicle had to be stripped down!

For the last couple of months I have been working on this Lotus Elan for a customer which I towed to my workshop as a non-runner, having been parked up for a long time by its previous owner. This weekend it had its first run up to Brands Hatch to the Lotus Festival so I thought I would share what went in to getting it there...
