Emmanuel College was founded in 1990 as Tyneside's City Technology College (CTC) and opened with just 150 Year 7 students. Popular with parents from the start because of its high expectations, academic rigour and strong disciplinary standards, the school was soon extended to accommodate a larger intake. Emmanuel now educates 1, 250 students across the 11-19 age range. Emmanuel strives to maintains a comprehensive intake, ensuring that both the IQ and socioeconomic status of students admitted mirrors the catchment area of inner-city Gateshead and Newcastle. Emmanuel students perform significantly above value-added measures, and their academic results have placed the College amongst the highest ranked schools in England. Ofsted has awarded it the highest grading of ‘Outstanding' in all five of its full inspections to date. Alongside a reputation for outstanding academic achievement, Emmanuel students are known for exemplary behaviour and a responsible and positive attitude to life, and this has led three Local Authorities in the North of England to invite Emmanuel to found similar schools in their locality. As a result, the Emmanuel School Foundation was founded, and now comprises The King's Academy, Trinity Academy and Bede Academy, each of which pursues academic excellence within an inner-city community.
