About Emtech Studio [Aa School Of Architecture]

Emergent Technologies and Design is a post-professional Masters programme focused on exploring new synergies of Architecture and Ecology in research driven design projects that are developed in an intellectually rigorous and creative studio environment.

Emtech Studio [Aa School Of Architecture] Description

EMERGENT TECHNOLGIES AND DESIGN M. SC. AND M. ARCH.

We are continuing to investigate new synergies of architecture and ecology through the critical intersection of computational design and fabrication. Our focus is on exploring experiential and social potentials of new material and spatial configurations for architectural and ecological urban systems situated in the dynamic contexts of emerging biomes. The programme is designed to stimulate critical thinking through experience of research driven design projects that are developed in an intellectually rigorous and creative studio environment. Our projects are pursued by multiple iterations through hypothesis, material and computational experimentation, robotic fabrication, and evaluation; reflected upon in verbal presentations and group discussions, and documented in analytical and scientifically structured papers.

Our Masters (M. Arch. /M. Sc. ) programme has two distinct phases – the Studio and the Dissertation. Both Studio and the Dissertation are aligned with, and supported by the research of the programme team and the advanced expertise our alumni and research colleagues in practice and industry.

The Studio commences 25 September 2017
Completes on 23 March 2018, Final Submission 25 April 2018

The Dissertation commences 23 April 2018
MSc. Final Presentation 12 September 2018, Final Submission 21 September 2018
M. Arch. Final Presentation 12 December 18 2018, Final Submission 11 January 2019

Bioclimatic Design for Towers
Kutay Mert Kilcioğlu (M.Arch., Turkey), Maritza Regina Rubio Martin (M.Arch., Spain)
Megacities turned out a consumption centre with the rapid growth of population and its demands. However, there is a huge potential for food production capacity in the cities which we can prevent the food shortage that is very possible to happen in the close future. In addition, the usage of that capacity will turn out the consumer population into a part of the pr...oduction chain.
The aim of the project is to turn our cities into a centre of food production which will result in many new job opportunities in the city. In order to achieve this ambition, a kinetic secondary facade will be designed and agricultural properties will be added. That facade will not only be beneficial for food production but also will be helpful to reduce energy consumption by adapting itself into the changing external conditions. Improvements in comfort zone inside of the buildings will be highly considered during the design phase.
In order to achieve our ambition, we will first focus on implementing designed facade system to existing skyscrapers. Secondly, an algorithm which adapts the system to be applicable for different scales will be generated. Finally, the results will be adapted for new construction high-rise buildings with bioclimatic principles implemented and a proposal design system established.

Michael Weinstock will participate in the 'City as an Organism' Debate with Rachel Armstrong, part of the Science Biennale at the Center for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona, on 7 February 2019, 19:30 - 21:00. “I will take a position that challenges some aspects of the metabolic argument by questioning the usefulness of the understanding of a singular organism - that the city is an aggregation of collective organisms with intersecting flows that operate across a number of s...cales - an ecosystem of symbiotic and competing organisms. Cultural views of nature, from the romantic vision of Carl Friedrich to Blade Runner, will frame the evolution of material ecosystems to the critical edge of stability in relation to climate and the material culture of cities. The situation is worse, much worse, than you think.” Image Credit: Milad Showkatbakhsh https://www.biennalciutaticiencia.barcelo na/…/la-ciutat-com…

Infrasonic - A Material Resonant System Abhinav Chaudhary (M.Arch., India), Miguel Escallon (M.Arch., Columbia), Neil Deep Singh Grewal (M.Arch., USA) In 2015, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude displaced over 6.6 million in Kathmandu, Nepal. Three years later, the country struggles to rebuild its capital. The aim of this study is to investigate a construction system, produced from locally sourced materials, that can aggregate and deploy as self-built, habitable infrastructure.... The study focuses on the relationships between material resonance, earthquake-resistant structures, and fabrication processes. An agent-based form-finding algorithm is developed using knowledge acquired through physical prototyping of mycelium-based composites to generate complex geometries that increase earthquake-resistance, optimise material usage, and enhance spatial occupation. The results show compelling evidence for a construction methodology to design and construct a 3-4-storey building. The scope of work contributes to advancements in bioengineering, confirming easy-to-grow, light-weight mycelium-composites as viable structural materials for construction. #aaschool #architecturalassociation #aaemtech #architecture #emergent #technology #design #computation #digital #programming #fabrication #biomimetics #emergence #complexity #ecology #urban #biome #experimentation #designexperimentation #computationaldesign #prototype #dynamicsystems #materialsystems #robotics #kukarobotics #roboticfabrication #AR #virtualreality #VR
