This is a BIG challenge! 5m consumers in the UK drink sparkling wine at least once each week. The UK produces 2m bottles of sparkling wine per year. Now that's an opportunity! In February 2007, Sarah and I set out on a lifetime journey, no crusade, to create a business that would play its small part in responding to this challenge, the challenge of changing the sparkling wine buying habits of a nation and so English Oak Vineyard was born. 23, 000 vines now contribute positively to our Eco system and to the production of a range of truly delicious award winning sparkling wines. Of our Engelmann Cuvée brand, judges at this years UK Vineyards Association wine competition said: "Pale gold hue, very fine fizz, clean and fresh with brioche and bitter croissant accenting yellow plum fruit, very attractive nose, Brut-style, lively, bright and light, brittle mousse texture, good length. Very nice wine. "Now doesn't that make you want to try a glass? Here in the UK, over 400 vineyards like ours, compete to be the 'brand of choice' of 26m wine Consumers. In the main, we don't compete with each other, but with products imported from abroad and lined up bewilderingly and anonymously along supermarket shelves. Our challenge is, not only to run and develop strong successful businesses, but equally important, to offer a genuinely appealing alternative. In a world obsessed with efficiency and quality to the point of bland uniformity, it is still possible to have quality AND character.
