About Epsrc Cdt In Future Propulsion And Power

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Propulsion and Power is an exciting partnership that brings together internationally recognised universities and global industry partners to create a unique consortium for aerothermal training and research. Building on the success of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Gas Turbine Aerodynamics, the centre will provide training in the key skills that future engineers in the field of Propulsion and Power will need to become leaders in research and design. The training programme involves the Whittle Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, the Osney Laboratory at the University of Oxford and the Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering Department at Loughborough University. These three universities have been specifically chosen because of their track record of research excellence in turbomachinery aerodynamics (Cambridge), heat transfer (Oxford) and combustor aerodynamics (Loughborough). The CDT has further assembled a group of companies in complementary sectors; Rolls-Royce, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Siemens UK and Dyson. The CDT is structured as a 1 year MRes + 3 year PhD. In year one, all students study a masters course at the University of Cambridge with the aim of providing a solid grounding in the theory of advanced propulsion and power aerodynamics, as well as the practical aspects of both experimental and computational research. Students will then experience working in the research laboratories of each of the three universities, and also in industry before developing a detailed project proposal dissertation for the PhD phase. The training delivered during the MRes provides a springboard to the PhD phase in years 2-4, where students undertake industrially‐focussed PhD projects at one of the three partner universities.
