What is Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)?
If you are a fan of action movies and enjoy the fight scenes then you have already seen Filipino Martial Arts in action as it is the art most used in the film and entertainment industry for all the exciting action that makes these movies so great.
... FMA is the indigenous martial art of the Philippines and is well known for both its weapons and empty handed skills which make it one of the most effective combat systems on the planet, it is also great fun to learn and practice.
FMA can be divided into three main components:
1. Weapons Skills - a wide variety of weapons are used in a practical, no-nonsense way, it is well known for its bladed weapons skills.
2. Empty Handed Skills - Often referred to as “Dirty Boxing” - a no-nonsense, brutal street based kicking and boxing system where nothing is barred.
3. Ground Skills - Real fights often end on the ground and the FMA have a comprehensive, brutal grappling system known as Dumog.

In Mondays FMA class our main training focus was on the Single Stick Assault Drill #1. Here is a break down of the 12 count movement.
- Abaniko - Downward X - Upward X... - Diagonal (downward/upward) - Diagonal (upward/downward) - High to Low
We also covered defence against the following:
- Cross wrist grab - Cross shoulder grab - Rear shoulder grab
