About Est.1761- The Bridgewater Canal In Salford
Celebrating the Salford stretch of the world famous Bridgewater Canal
Est.1761- The Bridgewater Canal In Salford Description
Established in 1761, the Bridgewater Canal's story began in Salford. An exciting new phase for the canal is just beginning. Supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Salford City Council is working in partnership with the Bridgewater Canal Company to revitalise this much loved waterway. The next two years will see the canal physically transformed with key sites regenerated, tow paths improved, more welcoming green spaces and bright new signage and visitor information.
While the physical improvements get underway, we're already busy working with local communities to reveal the Bridgewater Canal's hidden heritage and welcoming people to events and activities along the canal. Our great volunteer programme runs all year round, with plenty of opportunities to get involved through improving the canal and its green spaces or by helping to uncover parts of its long and varied history to share with new visitors.

Thanks to volunteers from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) for helping to reduce the amount of Himalayan Balsam at Duke's Drive.
Himalayan Balsam, also known as Jumping Jack due to its explosive seeds, is an invasive species which was first brought to Kew Gardens in 1839 and has since spread all over the country. The plant tolerates low light levels and also shades out other vegetation, so gradually impoverishing habitats by killing off other plants.
This plant can either be pulled out by hand (as they have a very shallow root system) or can be slashed at the base of the stem, this is what we call 'Balsam Bashing'.
We've got another Precarious Carnaval workshop tomorrow in Eccles Community Art Gallery, Eccles Shopping Centre, Boothway, M30 0EB.
10am - 1pm
Everyone is welcome to join us as we make colourful flowers from recycled bottles. The flowers will be part of our upcoming Precarious Carnaval event.

How lovely it is to see all the wildflowers that volunteers planted starting to bloom along the canal. The poppies at Duke's Drive are a particular favourite with the bees!
Volunteers from Urban Vision made a big difference to areas along the canal last week. They helped to clean and tidy the seating area and car park next to Bridgewater Mill in Patricroft as well as the area near the railway bridge at Hall Bank. Thanks for all their hard work, it really is appreciated!
We've had a busy couple of weeks with volunteers making sites along the canal look great. Thanks to PricewaterhouseCoopers #PwC for all their help at Duke's Drive, tasks included litter picking, clearing vegetation from the orienteering course and the paths.
Join us for a special foraging walk Wild Teas, Tinctures & Tonics at Duke's Drive this Saturday to find some natural ingredients that can be used for drinks and remedies. There'll also be a chance to try some delicious concoctions at the end of the walk! Free but booking is essential https://bit.ly/2WU7dYY

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped in the orchard at Duke's Drive last week. As well as pruning the soft fruit trees (damson, cherry and plum) we planted companion plants to help keep the pests away. We planted Marigolds to help to reduce the amount of aphids and lavender to help keep moths away, especially the Winter Moth which can be very bad news for fruit trees. We also made nests to encourage earwigs to pay a visit to the trees as they can help to keep pests under control.
If you're interested in becoming a Bridgewater Volunteer and helping us to improve places along the canal please email us at bridgewatercanal@salford.gov.uk or call Jill Tyson on 07872808003
