We couldn’t celebrate International Woman’s Day without mention of our Excess Energy superstar director Rhona Gardiner! After co-founding a successful surf travel company, on the side of an international PR career in London, Rhona fell in love with Cornwall and bought herself a little flat by the sea. She began Excess Energy Communications from her living room and as the business grew, she and the crew moved into an office. 14 years later, Excess Energy continues to flourish, with the clients and the work that inspires all of us, day-in, day-out. We are in daily awe of her tenacity and creativity. (Sorry RG, we had to do it :-))

Our next wonderful lady of the day is Sally Shalam, the brilliant tourism consultant and travel journalist and generally the wise owl of all things most wonderfully British. We’ve been lucky enough to work with Sally in the past and she is incredibly on the ball and a big inspiration to us all #IWD2019

With a strong track record from the corporate world in business management, team development, change management, marketing and sales management with FTSE 100 Business Services Companies, Cornwall was lucky to tempt Ally and her family back here in 2002. Since then, she has led... and continually evolved and developed the Unlocking Potential programme, ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the EU funded support programmes, creating over 1,600 new graduate level jobs as well as supporting the development of over 900 SMEs and the same amount number of business start-ups.
Quite rightly bestowed a Cornwall Women of Achievement Award and a Cornwall College Star award for Outstanding Leadership, Ally’s focus and passion in supporting the growth and development of SMEs and creating new graduate level jobs and opportunities is unparalleled. Ally lives in Falmouth, is married with three children, and still manages to throw herself around a netball court! Chair of a large local Netball Club she’s also recently created a new team of returners to the sport!

Ellie Malone is an all round super-caring-woman and founder of both Effervescent and Radiant in Plymouth, Devon. Amongst Ellie’s incredible qualifications are the following: theatre director, aerial acrobat and underwater choreographer. And as a result of this unique mix, she has twenty years’ experience of working with children, young people and the vulnerable through arts to help them say what they need to say. She has degrees in English (Contemporary Cultural Criticism) a...nd in Community Education, is trained in counselling and play therapy, and is a qualified Childline Counsellor. Ellie founded Effervescent in Cornwall in 2004 after a brief period of developing and teaching on foundation degrees and undergraduate degrees for Truro College, Oxford Brookes and Falmouth College of Art. Effervescent is now a collective of designers, marketers, artists and community development workers, committed to creating lasting, large-scale, positive social change.
Over the last 12 years, Ellie has led her team, working internationally on extraordinary creative projects and campaigns; connecting with audiences, influencing behaviours and getting truly remarkable results. She now combines working as Effervescent’s Creative Director with guest lecturing, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and consultancy. Phew! Emily Stevenson. She is the 21-year-old student who received a letter of thanks from none other than Sir David Attenborough - but Emily Stevenson is still on a mission to see an end to single-use plastic. The former marine biology student from Trevone Bay has undertaken a project to stop plastic from ending up on beaches worldwide.

Becca Thompson, alongside her partner, Elliot, runs Falmouth’s starriest establishment – the fabulous Star & Garter Falmouth, which is one of the destination’s oldest pubs, constantly delighting travellers and locals alike with its fresh concepts and contemporary, yet super comfortable, surrounds. We had the best time ever celebrating our Excess Energy Christmas party at the Star and Garter, thanks for the awesome memories.#IWD #IWD2019
