U16 Girls National League Bristol Flyers 44-41Spartans Match Report
We asked the Spartans girls to play with confidence, commitment and as a team, focusing on the positive and not dwelling on any negatives. They could not have done this any better, on or off court.
... An impressive and positive start to our first campaign in the NL, especially due to Duke of Edinburgh commitments for many in our team.
This was a a game between two evenly matched teams with the lead swinging in both sides favour throughout the match, with both teams winning 2/4 quarters. Congratulations to the Flyers eventually came out on top despite a courageous fightback.
Both sides started nervously, being brand new teams in the league this was understandable however, Flyers were more clinical under the basket and led at the end of first quarter by 12-5. In the 2nd it was the Spartans girls turn to turn on the pressure, scoring 16 pts to 7 in the 2nd quarter to take the lead 21-19 going into the half time break. The baskets did not fall in the 3rd quarter for the Spartans, who although got to the basket did not capitalise in open play or more importantly from the 3 point line! So it was the Flyers who took the lead again.
However, despite finding themselves with a 10pt deficit the Spartans did not waiver and dragged the score line back it was a great achievement that showed a growth in maturity and confidence. The final quarter Spartans put the pressure on again right until the last play but despite scoring a further 12 points, it was not enough!
Congratulations to the Flyers players and coaches, we look forward to December for a rematch. This first match highlighted what a fantastic team we have, the girls were focused, confident and above all positive throughout, they supported each other on and off court and could not have put any more effort into their performances.
A satisfying first display into the NL for the girls who will take confidence,determination and experience from the game into the rest of the season. Taylor, sponsored by Double 'S' Exhausts Ltd, turned in a captains performance with a team high score of 18 pts, as well as being solid in defence with 5 rebounds. She was supported by Amy, sponsored by Snout & About Hog Roast, who scored 9 pts and Hazel, sponsored by Pattersons Bar Catering Cleaning Supplies, with 5pts. However, player of the match, as voted by the players,went to Millie (sponsored by Darren Moon Building Services LTD) who worked tirelessly in defence and caused opposition players into numerous turnovers all whilst committing only 2 fouls! This was an exceptional and clinical performance by Millie and from a coaches point of view, it was fantastic to have her on court for the whole match...for once (sorry Millie, couldn't resist)
We very much look forward to welcoming Pontypridd Panthers Basketball to Exeter next Saturday for our first home match. 1.30pm Exeter College.

Game recap Spartans U16 Boys vs Tigers Basketball
Very positive start for the Spartans that challenged the Tigers until the 3rd quarter where the Tigers experience gave them the upper hand.
... Both teams started the game nervously playing very hard on defence closing the first quarter with low score 9-9. In the 2nd quarter Spartans played excellent defence and finished the half strong, up by 6, 24-18. However the Tigers with a very strong half court zone defence managed to get the lead back finishing the 3rd up by 7, 42-35. Having the momentum going in the 4th and staying calm the Tigers managed to extend their lead while staying focused and playing under control.
Final score Spartans 41-59 Tigers
Great learning curve for our players which had some great moments both defensively and offensively. Great week coming up. Lots of time to improve on Monday and Thursday as we start our National League campaign next Saturday away at Bristol.
Well done to all our players and Tigers Basketball for the game!! A huge thanks to Tracie for helping out running the table of refreshments and for the amazing Lemon cake. Also, a huge thanks to Exeter College player Michael for coming down and helping out with the scoreboard and our injured player Tre for recording the game. Thanks to all the parents that came down to watch and support.
