The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) has launched a top 100 list of #100HistoricalHeroines along side its main campaign of #100heroines which is to celebrate a hundred photographic contemporary heroines.
Who is your heroine?
To nominate use hashtag #100HistoricalHeroines or use nomination form at ... http://www.rps.org/100-heroines/nominate- here
The same form can be used for both #100heroines & #100HistoricalHeroines @rps100heroines
Our first nomination for RPS Historical Heroines is of course Lee Miller not just for her part in the use of the solarisation technique in photography but also for her integrity and work as a fashion, portrait & Surrealist photographer and a war correspondent. #100HistoricalHeroines

Currently on show in our Gallery an exhibition that remembers the beauty of Syria - Syrian Road by Piers Metcalfe. ‘In May 2008 we went on a trip through the desert: it would be fun, an adventure. We could see the sites like Palmyra again... when I got home I had the films developed, filed them and forgot about them. Revisiting them now is much harder than I thought. Many of these places have been looted or destroyed and as I look at the nameless figures in some of the image...s and when I contemplate their unknown fate I feel only fear and guilt and find it hard to breathe.’ Piers Metcalfe, extract from the book that accompanied the exhibition. 20% of all Sales or works in the exhibition will be donated to Syria Relief www.syriarelief.org.uk More than 50% of the book sale price also goes to Syria Relief. Exhibition is FREE ENTRY Sundays 10-4.30pm until 9th Sept 2018

Happy 120th Birthday Henry Moore! Born on this day 30th July 1898. From 1943 Lee Miller & David E. Scherman covered some of the same war correspondent assignments. It is interesting to see the difference in what they both captured with their camera. Whilst David’s LIFE Magazine photographs are now owned and represented by Getty Images, before he died David E. Scherman gifted the Lee Miller Archives his personal photographs of Lee like this one of her with her Rolleiflex camera & flash gun in Portsmouth which we now represent. A great support...er of the formation of the Lee Miller Archives, David E. Scherman gave us hours of interview and wrote the forward for the @thamesandhudson book of Lee’s writing from the war ‘Lee Miller’s War’.

The Man Behind the Mask #2.... In 1941, David E. Scherman was on board an Egyptian liner called the Zamzam, heading for an assignment in South Africa. The ship was attacked and sunk by a German war ship disguised as a merchant vessel. David took pictures from the lifeboat and when he was taken prisoner by the Germans and hid the films in tubes of shaving cream and toothpaste which he later smuggled back to LIFE Magazine to publish. The pictures of the ship enabled the Britis...h Navy to track down the surface raider and sink it.

The man behind the mask... David E.Scherman LIFE Magazine photographer & war correspondent. It was David E. Scherman or ‘Davie’ as Lee called him that first advised Lee to become a correspondent with the US army during wwii. They met in 1942 and although Davie was 9 years younger they became close friends and lovers. David E.Scherman moved in with Lee & her other partner Roland Penrose and they lived together until Davie was sent on assignment to Europe in 1944.

Remembering Lee Miller, who died today 21st July in 1977. Mistress of self re-invention, she started as a model for Vogue & Vanity Fair, then crossed to the other side of the camera becoming a photographer of portraits, Surrealist images & fashion. In WWII she became a war correspondent for Vogue, covering fashion, combat & the advance of the allies through Europe. Recording the horror of the death camps Dachau & Buchenwald with her camera. Post war was difficult for her and... she struggled with the effects of what she had seen. Today she would probably be diagnosed with having PTSD. She also battled with Post Natal depression after the birth of her only child, Antony at the age of 40. Eventually she learnt to cope reinventing herself one final time as a Gourmet cook. When she died was again being celebrated in magazines but this time a celebrity for her skills at entertaining and in the kitchen.
Lee Miller’s ashes are in the garden here at Farleys her home and also the home of her Archives that continues to care for her legacy today.

Opening on Sunday in ours Gallery- Syrian Road, an exhibition that celebrates and reminds us of the beauty of Syria.
In 2008 Piers Metcalfe went on a road trip through the desert in Syria with his Syrian wife. During the journey he captured some hauntingly beautiful photographs of their travels with a plastic toy camera.
‘…it may be the fear that it could be a very long time before we can roam freely here again that make these pictures so important to me.’ Piers Metcalfe.

What a beautiful home, so inspired and fascinated in what I saw today. The tour was brilliant, nice intelligent girl who showed us around. Lee Miller home is something which I expected to have some good memories and moments made in this place. The only thing which would of made this tour even better, if there was more of Lee Miller personal things on display, more of her writings, camera equipment and more personal photographs of her life and also at her home and the people who come to visit. I'm just amazed that Picasso spent time here ( Sussex) , and think of all the other people who must of come to visit and created things here. I sure was born in the wrong time.

User

We absolutely adored it! Such beautiful gardens and the house was really interesting

I would love to go again,it's every bit as special as Charleston and Monk's House and Antony Penrose was really welcoming.

User

This is real art immersion. The extended tour includes a fascinating personal, and compelling talk by Antony Penrose. One of the best experiences and a rare opportunity not to be missed!

User

The house is colourful and stuffed with fabulous art and interesting objects. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful and we enjoyed the sculptures. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot about Lee Miller and her life as well as famous visitors to the farmhouse. My one quibble is the tour was too short - only half an hour instead of the 50 minutes we thought we were getting - and felt slightly rushed as there was another group right behind us. Well worth a visit, and I will be back!

User

Magical. The garden was beautiful. The house fascinating. Lovely staff and volunteers. Mr Penrose picked the mint personally for the mint tea available in the small tea facilities. Down to earth but ethereal at the same time. Will be visiting again X

User

I visited as I am a big fan of Lee millers photography work but Farley Farm House is soo much more. Wonderful experience and I've already recommended it to several friends

User

I had the pleasure of finding out about lee millers Farley homestead last summer and was blown away! I absolutely loved it and making it my number one priority to visit on my next trip. I want to experience more of the inspirational place.

User

Fascinating tour, and beautiful decor. I loved roaming the sculpture garden as well.

User

Beautiful house and gardens. Jenny, our tour guide was excellent in bringing us a snapshot of the lives and works of Miller and Penrose and their surrealist friends. A real treat to be able to experience their stories and works in their own home. Thank you Anthony for allowing us to visit your home.

User

Beautiful home and fascinating extended tour.

User

Anyone with even a passing interest in 20th century Art and History will find something to treasure at Farley Farm House.

User

A wonderful visit, so interesting, full of the most amazing art, books and memories of this family. Thank you for your warmth and welcome.

User

A wonderful visit to Farley Farmhouse the home of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose. A lovely afternoon with a knowledgeable tour guide Belinda. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying it here, the house is packed with surrealist treasures, stories interweaving the objects. My favourite pieces were the original contact sheet of the Hitler Bathtub shoot, and Lee's silver plated knuckle dusters! The original poster for the first surrealist exhibition by Max Ernst was incredible to see as well, all the artwork is gorgeous. Just go!

User

A wonderful place to visit so much to learn about two amazing people, and a lovely feel to a home, not a stately pile.

User

A brilliant and informative tour of a home essentially, where you are ushered into intimate spaces that have been occupied by the artists I grew up reading about at school. It's as if they have only just left the room.

I really like the continuing tradition of support by the next generation of the family, of upcoming artists exhibited in the barn.
