Wow, we visited for lunch today. The service was above and beyond fantastic. The young chap and lady behind the bar were lovely and nothing was ever to much to ask! Food was lovely too

User

What a fabulous Christmas dinner. Great food, great service and I didn't have to wash up! For me Perfection. Thank you. We will be back again and again

User

We had a very lovely waitress, we had a chat about the name of the pub and the legend behind it. We were warned there may be a wait on food as there were some very large parties but it didn't feel like long at all. Couldn't fault the staff who were very attentive and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious, I had the rotisserie chicken and it was really tasty especially the gravy. Nothing bad to say.

User

The staff were friendly polite and professional. Food was great, lots of choice and large portions. I will definately visit again.

* Extra bonus points for being dog friendly

User

Staff were so friendly! Food was brilliant! They catered for a large party, also put banners up and bought a cake out on request. Can’t fault this place, will definitely return!

User

My family visited yesterday evening, Jake was wonderful, so helpful and the food was so tasty when we are back up this way again we will definatly be calling in again, would highly recommend this establishment

User

It was lovely 10 pound for a deal with a pint fast hot yummy

User

I visited the restaurant today with my family who are local to the area.

My little 19 month old boy has multiple allergies so it's very very difficult for us to eat out.

I would just like to say the staff were fantastic. I queried a couple of the menu choices and staff double checked ingredients with the kitchen. Even when I had to adapt his meal it was no issue. The lady that served us said she would advise the kitchen my little boy has allergies so to be extra careful with his meal.

It is very very rare we receive such thorough and accommodating service! Thank you very much! We will definitely be returning....and we live over an hours drive away!

User

User

We ad fab meal staff lovely not been since fellow deer .Can't fault it

User

nice place with friendly staff and good food if you like roast chicken. Nice place to sit outside and have a drink dog welcome which is good

User

Service good until after main course and then the staff disappeared and we had to go to the bar to ask abut a dessert. All 3 staff in the kitchen chatting. Food good, although husband's lasagne portion very small. Paid extra for fiery fries bur they weten't fiery at all.

User

Played for drinks. Then when we got good bill. The same bar man/ landlord had sffrf them to the bill. Only just spotted it or would have played twice. Ft like guilty for asking for food anyway.sad because it's really lovely no

User

Passable food. A bit limited on the lighter options. Staff friendly and efficient.

User

Party of 4 on a Friday Tea time. Staff lovely and my friends food apparently tasty and enjoyable. I ordered a burger which looked perfectly edable....until I tried to. Please remember guys, the animal this came from has already been slaughtered, it doesn't need killing again. Cremated does not do any meat justice.

Having said that, I do like this place.

User

Lots of people there when we (party of two) arrived on a bank holiday Sunday and we had a choice of whether we sat outside or in. With it being a hot day, we ate in so not to be bothered by flying things.

Selected a table, ordered drinks and received them within minutes.

Ordered food (Scampi) and that arrived within 15 minutes. I would have expected a wedge of lemon with it but I suppose that if I had asked, they would have provided it. Plenty of staff around and appeared very attentive and made sure we were happy with our food within minutes of receiving it. We would have liked to have seen a more varied fish menu available instead of the staple fish and chips or, as I. Our case, scampi.

Plates cleaned away quickly and also offered the menu again for the desserts.

Very good service, clean, polite staff and welcoming. Muddy boots not objected to so if you have been for a bit of a walk on a typical ‘Summer’ day and get wet through, you will still be welcomed there.

 3 stars from us.

User

Went with a group and we had to wait a long time for the drinks order to be taken then again for it to be delivered, then again for the food order to be taken and again for the food to eventually arrive. Consequently we waisted a great deal of the afternoon.

User

Went for family meal first time I had dined here my pastry was like solid on the ale and steak pie need to change recipe or learn how to re-heat properly the other three meals were good but when complained about mine was not very helpful and still had to pay

The heart of hospitality is slowly eroding from these establishments.

User

If you have the Beef and Ale Pie make sure you ask for a jack hammer to eat it!!!!

User

I only go there for a drink now as there is very limited choice in Chapel. The food is awful and usually luke warm if lucky & non discript! Very poor and Im really surprised they"ve been getting away with it for so long!

You really need to up your game

User

Went today and the service was fab all friendly, the food was the total opposite, it was foul! The maccaronie cheese tasted like water & had no taste atall. My boyfriends was undercooked & in general just not nice :(

User

Went for breakfast with Santa with my 4 year old grandson must have been the worse thing I have eaten , drinks were Luke warm when came out mushrooms raw, toast what toast only 1 side , sausage cremated and undercooked bacon as for the staff what staff they were hardly seen , I would never go again, couldn't complain as no one was around which was very convenient as for serving food like that I would be ashamed and if I ran the place I would not have allowed to leave the kitchen looking how it was and £6.95 per head very shocking, I'm sure someone managed to speak to someone and complain as listening to all the other tables I would say that 80% was not happy at all if only could post the food people could also see what we had was not edible to eat

We went with Family today 4 adults and 3 children for my daughters 1st birthday . No staff to be seen on our arrival , hardly anyone eating but the drinks service was slow. Was told it was table service so we all chose from the menu. Upon ordering I was told there were no chicken goujons, this rules out several of my choices as a large portion of the dishes use them . My mother in law then had to rethink her option also so asked for a jacket potato which they haven’t got . I must admit by this point I was rather annoyed so my partner asked if there actually was any food available and the waiter very sarcastically said well yeah anything else on the menu . Not being funny but aldi is next door , not hard to buy a few jacket potatoes !! Needless to say we didn’t stop for desert , if they actually had any , or offer a tip . We will not be returning and judging by their lack of custom I’m guess a lot of other people feel the same . Very very disappointing .

User

We waited well over 45 minutes, to be served burnt, dry chicken, split cheese sauce on the mac & cheese, roast potatoes that looked like boiled potatoes, no gravy on the Sunday roast, 3 sweet potato fries in our tiger fries.

Always read reviews before you eat anywhere! Looks are very deceiving, probably the worst place I’ve eaten!

User

We have just drove 40 minutes after booking a table less than an hour ago. To be to told that there atleast an hour wait on food after waiting 20 to be seated! Don't take the booking if you can't serve the customers you have!!!!!

User

Use this place frequently but NEVER again. The last 2 times have been very disappointing. Waited over an hour for food and when I asked how much longer was told another 10 mins. Wouldn't mind but was not at all busy so got up and left.

User

Took my family for Sunday lunch at 1.15; there were 9 of us. It took 40 minutes to order drinks and over an hour for the starters to arrive...only four ordered so asked for the children's meals to be brought too. They didn't arrive until 10 past 3. The little ones were bored and hungry and practically climbing the walls by this stage. No explanations from staff when chased up. All meals were delivered at different times and were lukewarm. The children's meals were cold and we sent them back...more of a wait! It was teatime when we finished eating. Got no explanations when repeatedly went to bar to ask what was going on; and pushed for a decent percentage off the bill but wasn't as successful as I would have liked. We won't go back. Ruined a lovely family day.

Service: 1 Food: minus 2. Environment: 3

So this evening my boyfriend and I tried the Fickle Mermaid for a second time - the first visit a few weeks ago they had run out of food.

Wish we hadn't bothered

Three young teens on duty and not an ounce of sense between the three.

Tables were left covered in empty plates, drinks taken to wrong table and charged to our table and not rectified at the bar ( fortunately I'd heard their mistake and insisted on it being sorted), asked constantly if we wanted the bill, drinks taking over an hour to be served, young staff not being able to take soft drink orders And not being given cutlery along with food.

Which brings me to the food....... a plated roast beef dinner........ fatty beef, rock hard spuds with next to no potato left inside and watery tasteless gravy. Half the advertised veg was missing and the red cabbage tasted off.

The table behind us had waited an hour and still weren't even given drinks. When they asked the young man dealing with me he stated the drinks were right there.......on the bar not at their table.

When I complained very quietly and calmly I was given a barrage of excuses as to why the service was so bad to which I stated I'm not interested in excuses. The service is diabolical and despite receiving 30% discount on the bill, I will not be returning to the establishment and since reading other similar reviews for the Fickle Mermaid I would rather go Macdonalds than eat here again

User

Pingy micro food and frozen chips about as interesting as a wet day in Buxton.

User

Organised party for 13 , for my neices birthday. Booked balloons and banners . They were expecting us , was quiet - no tables set up , only given an area . Booking for 6.30 , was after 8pm when starters came out , and mother who is diabetic has to ask for bread . Was nearly 9 when had main , and didn't leave till late .

The place was lovely decor wise , and waiting staff were friendly . Seem to have big problems in the kitchen and getting food out . Very disappointed with main - roast chicken , with vegetables and salad - the salad was only lettuce, nothing else . Others in the party had been before and had had poor service- which is such a shame , as could be a great place if they managed it properly. I was in the industry and understood both side , but this was a quiet night , with pre booked table in advance for a special Occation . They said the. He'd had taken unauthorised leave and gone away on holiday - I would recommend agency staff or linking with Buxton catering college for these Occations .

User

Have used this pub numerous occasions since moving to chapel but the last two times have been very disappointing. Visited today. Ordered drinks. Ordered food. 20 minutes laster we were advised no soda water so I changed my order to coke. Then advised no coke as the machine broke. Fine as this can happen but no suitable alternatives really and weren’t advised this initially - however we chose from the small bottled range. Starters came - 40 minutes we had been in there, still no drink. The starters were overcooked and bland. Drinks finally arrived after asking again. Then the main. Medium mixed grills - they were well done. Asked for mustard and never came until asking a second waitress. Seemed everything wasn’t available or an effort and was very quiet in there. Staff were friendly enough but still one of the worst eating experiences we have encountered.

User

Food was awful, customer service was poor and management didn’t even apologise for how poor our experience was. What a sad transition as this place used to be really good when it was the Fallow Deer.

User

Comfortably the worst pub lunch I've ever had.

Service was shockingly slow/careless.

We ordered, from the menu, the cheese and pickle sandwich - which had to be sent back as there was virtually no cheese on it (seriously? How difficult is it to make a cheese sandwich?)

The "classic" club sandwich - which according to the menu was 'three slices of toasted white bloomed bread, pulled rotisserie chicken, bacon, little gem lettuce, beef tomato and roast chicken flavour mayo'.

What arrived was missing the little gem lettuce, missing the beef tomato, missing the chicken flavour Mayo and hadn't been toasted... 7 things to put together! They managed 2!!!!

Just an embarrassingly poor attempt at a pub lunch.

User

Came yesterday for a Sunday lunch. The woman that served us for drinks didn't have a clue about anything (I get she was new but surely she should of been trained abit?)...my partner ordered beef and horse raddish sauce and I ordered the chicken. My partners meal came out with no horse raddish sauce,so he informed a member of staff and she said she'd get him some...15 mins later and still no horse raddish sauce!! So he informed another memwber of staff and she brought it us (by then his meal was cold and half eaten by waiting), my meal weren't so bad except the cauliflower cheese and the veg was cold. My sons chicken burger was dry with a piece of old lettuce just thrown on top of it. It wasn't even that busy so they had no excuse really. £30.05 for 3 meals and 3 drinks, which myself and my son left half of ours! On the way out my son said "can we stick to the hanging gate in future?" and that's coming from a 9 year old boy! Says it all really!!! This is the 5th time we've been here and we keep giving it another chance, but nothing seems to improve. So we won't be coming back again.

User

After being told we had to wait 45 minutes for food it finally arrived an hour and 20 minutes later. Other guests that had arrived after us were receiving their food before us. When it arrived the chicken dippers were burnt to a crisp, my buttermilk chicken burger was incinerated and cold and was missing rotisserie chicken I’d payed for too. We asked for a refund, which I got my burger refunded. My son was poorly and sick and when informed the staff she had a face like a smacked arse. The customer service skills here are appalling, run by a bunch of kids. Deffo will not be coming here again.
