1st place winner The Peculiar Story of the Purple Portal Emma Chamberlain Age 10 It had been six weeks since my sister vanished. Six weeks since she had been sucked in by the massive purple portal. I should have jumped into the portal right then, but I didn’t. So here I am, back at the exact spot where my sister had vanished. A purple light started to flicker, dim at first, but soon it was as bright as any star. My heart was in my mouth - fear had never been so cruel. Then j...ust like that - the purple light engulfed me. I woke up feeling dizzy. It felt as if the dungeon was spinning in circles. Wait…dungeon?! The purple portal brought me to a spooky dungeon! I was alone, or so I thought. In the corner of the room, surrounded by many rags and blankets, was a very pale figure. Could she help me? I clambered out of my cold hard bed and started to walk towards her. She must have heard me; as soon as my feet touched the ground, her eyes flickered open. “W-w-who are you?” she weakly asked. “Nancy,” I said, “I got sucked up by some purple light and…” “Yes, yes. We’ve all gone through it,” the girl said in a tone that made it seem obvious. “I’m Irene by the way, nice meeting you, sad we all have to get eaten by the ogre soon”. Me… eaten? By an OGRE!!!! I had to get out of here. I tried to take another step towards her, but something held me back, literally. For the first time I noticed something strong and shiny wrapped around my wrists. Chains! All thoughts of escape went. “Seems like the chains are giving you problems!” Irene laughed, “No point of escaping, Nancy, you’ll just get eaten with pickled ginger!” “But my sister, my dear sister Bonnie is here somewhere and I must find her!” I stammered. Irene’s face darkened, “She’s next to be eaten I’m afraid. Find her in the great dining hall.” “But what about these chains?” I whinged. “Quit your moaning!” snapped Irene, “I have a knife that will cut through those chains as if they were made of butter!” Irene gingerly handed me the knife. I sliced through my chains. Without a second thought, I hastily sprinted towards the dungeon doors. I swung them open, and strode through them, waving goodbye to Irene as I walked. Actually finding the great dining room was easy. All I had to do was follow the putrid stench and…voila! Right in front of me was a room with a massive oak table with massive oak chairs. No sign of an ogre though, strange. My thoughts came to a halt as soon as I saw the cage. A little girl was inside it, my little sister. I saw a key hanging on the wall. After that, everything was a blur. As soon as the key went in to the lock on the cage, purple light blinded me. Amazingly I was back home, with my sister. Rogan's Books Emma Chamberlain

This years winner Liliy Gibson age 9. Elsie Hunter and her adventures at Salcum school. One bright summers morning Elsie Hunter was busy rushing around grabbing all her bags and spell books so that she could pick up one of her best friends named Benjamin and go to school together. Elsie was a kind and intelligent girl that lived with her mother, father and little sister Kate. She has chestnut brown hair which always blows about in the gentle breeze. Her eyes are emerald – gre...en and always shine brightly in the sun. As she picked up her final book she hopped into the huge, black car and as quick as a flash her father sped away as Kate started howling violently until her mother dragged her inside. After an hour Elsie arrived at Benjamin’s house and she could already tell that her father was losing his temper. Benjamin wrapped his arms around his mother but stuck his floppy tongue out at his father, then he jumped into the car and again Elsie’s father sped off. As they had woken up early Elsie had a quick doze but woke up at the train station. Benjamin was alert as usual so he was wondering around waiting for the train and his other friends. Surprisingly the train was at the platform 46 instead of platform 36 so they were both late but they did get a carriage with Tom and Olivia (their other best friends). The train had a very unpleasant smell of diesel and smoke so they had to cover their noses which gave Tom a painful nose bleed. They arrived 3 hours later at the amazing school of witchcraft and wizardry after playing a long game of magical eye spy. The school has old rusty railings and 5 house turrets like a palace, but the thing that caught Elsie’s eye was the new modern, snowy – white lunch hall. She quickly checked her book list to see if she had all of them. The list included: How to fight a yeti, The basic rules of catch and many others. As soon as they walked up to the school gates they swathe evil art twins called Mr and Mrs Minch. Tom grinned politely at them and for once they bowed at him. Olivia quickly hurried them into potions class and then took a seat next to Elsie. Mrs Slick was at her desk looking cheerful and then finally said “begin on chapter 6, page 108.” Without fuss the whole class settled down immediately. Benjamin finished first but then heard a cackle. Tom went to investigate and saw Mrs Minch running away, so all four of them dashed off to stop her. “To late now!” she screamed as she jumped into a miniature tomb. “Thank goodness” Tom muttered. But will that be the end of her? Rogan's Books Victoria Gibson
