About Fishermen'S Mission

The Fishermen's Mission fights poverty and despair in the UK's fishing communities by providing emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families.

Fishermen'S Mission Description

The Fishermen’s Charity

The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen (the Fishermen’s Mission) provides care, compassion and support to working, retired and disabled fishermen and their families. Deep-sea fishing is dangerous and unpredictable. Hardship and tragedy are facts of everyday life in the UK’s fishing communities. It is to the Fishermen’s Mission that fishermen and their families turn when they need financial, practical and emotional support.

We are the only national charity specifically providing this care; we are THE FISHERMENS CHARITY.

A supporter of the charity in Porthleven #Cornwall, The Square at Porthleven have raised just over, £1,600 in under six months. A voluntary donation of £1 is added to the customer’s bill to support the fishermen that risk their lives to bring fish to our shores. “We’ve been supporters of the Fishermen’s Mission for about 11 years. Our restaurant overlooks the harbour and we are so reliant on the best of Cornish fish it felt right to support the charity who look after the fishermen in times of need. Our customers are very supportive and generous.” Said owners Anna and Stew Eddy.

The Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides or the Long Island, is actually a chain of islands running for over 100 miles off the North West coast of Scotland. the winter months see extreme weather fronts and long dark days, whilst the summertime days enjoy many hours of sunlight.
The islands are home to over 200 shellfish trawlers and creel boats. They are also the setting for the Fishermen’s Mission’s work in the Western Isles and the home of Superintendent William Macleod. From his Stornoway Welfare office, William regularly travels a network of ferries, causeways and winding single and double track roads, covering the length and breadth of the islands supporting its fishing community.

last year, gifts in Wills from our supporters helped us provide nearly 200 people with emergency grants so they could put food on the table for their struggling families. They enabled our frontline outreach teams to visit over 6,600 individuals who benefited from compassionate and knowledgeable support.

Troon Harbour Blessing, the eighth year the event has been organised and getting bigger each year, with over two hundred people in attendance.
Troon Churches Together arranged for the celebrants, with Reverend David Prentice-Hyers of Troon Old Parish Church leading the celebration, Pastor David Rudge of the Church of the Nazarene supporting and our own Very Reverend David W. Lacy leading the actual blessing of the harbour.

The team at Rick Stein, Porthleven has raised over £1,500. Their annual lunches in the spring of this year and last year, have been a success. A special 3 course menu was created, packed with Rick’s classic dishes, for £15. A cover charge of £2.50 went directly to the Fishermen’s Mission, as well as extra donations generously given by customers and a donation from Rick and Jill. A wonderful donation that will support many Cornish fishing families. The charity’s aims of practi...cal welfare and emergency support comes from a small team of; full time, part time and volunteers. The Porthleven Rick Stein team raised valuable funds and awareness of the charity. Taking time to talk to their customers about the welfare and emergency support that is offered to the fishing community. The monies are vital as the charity rely on donations, they are pleased to say that for every £1 donated, 88p is spent on providing the services to fishermen, active, retired, as well as their families.
