Camden Council has published landscape designs for a new public park at Alfred Place, a redesign for the existing Whitfield Gardens, and is seeking comments on the proposals this summer. The scheme is part of a £35 million transformation of the Tottenham Court Road area -- "the biggest Camden council-led transport scheme the borough has ever seen" and will address public demand for more public open space, improve air quality, and deal with traffic congestion and road safety, says Camden. Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust are consulting on plans to change mental health services and move patients from the St Pancras hospital to a new purpose-built site next to the Whittington Hospital, a project to be partly funded by the sale of a property at Tottenham Mews in Fitzrovia. The consultation is seeking the public's views on moving patient beds from St Pancras Hospital to a new site to be built next to the Whittington Hospital on Highgate Hill, and create two community hubs at Greenland Road in Camden Town, and at Lowther Road in Holloway. Camden Council has secured £870,000 of government funding to assist homeless people in the borough after a count of rough sleepers identified a more accurate picture of its street population. The money, from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), is the highest amount awarded for any individual local authority. Neighbouring Westminster Council will receive £534,466, Islington Council £265,987, and the Greater London Authority will also receive £3,300,000. Westminster council has written to community groups in the neighbourhoods surrounding Oxford Street to announce that "completely new proposals" will be drawn up after the summer but that pedestrianisation is "off the table for good". In a letter signed by leader Nickie Aiken and cabinet member Richard Beddoe they say there is a very clear democratic mandate not to proceed with pedestrianisation plans. Camden Safer Streets Team will be carrying out a comprehensive count of people sleeping rough in the borough this week and is looking for volunteers from the community to help. In the autumn of 2017 an official count revealed that there were total of 1,137 rough sleepers in London. Camden reported the largest increase from 17 in 2016 to 127 in 2017 -- a 647 percent increase (correcting a huge underestimate the previous year).
