WHY DOES YOUR HORSE SPOOK AT NOTHING?
Horses can hear up to 4km away, so what may seem like nothing to you could be something scary in the distance. 😲😧😬😱
Ear Facts:... * The conical shape of the ear shields the sound your horse is focusing on, fading out everything else * It tells your horse which direction the sound is coming from *Constant shifting backwards and forwards with the ears is normal for your horse as it helps him keep tabs on the surroundings *There are 10 muscles in the ear so he can turn them 180 degrees and use them independently. We only have 3!

SHE'S BACK! πŸ€— We are thrilled that Nicola Cooper Dressage will be holding another clinic at Fitzroy Court Stables on Saturday 29 September.
We had an amazing time in August with Nicola so can thoroughly recommend this clinic. You are guaranteed to learn something new, no matter what your level of riding, non-dressage to grand prix. Nicola's approach fills you with confidence as you can see the results there and then.
... Limited spaces so book now, Β£45 lesson or Β£50 lesson and lunch with Nicola. We totally recommend the lunch option, it was so much fun! Booking form in tack room, speak to Sara or message. Priority given to liveries.

HOW TO CORRECTLY MEASURE YOUR HORSE FOR A RUG
1. Firstly grab another person and move your horse so he is standing squarely on level ground. 2. Using a cloth tape and keeping it level and tight, one person holds the horse and the tape at the middle point at the front of his chest whilst the other takes it around the sides of his body to his hindquarters at the widest point i.e. where the cheek meets the tail and reads the measurement. 3. It is best to take the measurement i...n feet and inches e.g. 5 foot 9 inches (5'9”) as this is how most rugs are sold in the UK. 4. Rugs are sized in brackets of 3 inches, generally starting at 4' and going up from there so 4'3", 4'6", 4'9", 5', 5'3" etc. If your measurement falls between a size it's better to round up and have a little more room than be too tight. 5. For turnout rugs people often prefer them to hang a little over the tail to give a bit more protection so you may want to go up a size. For stable rugs you may prefer them to stop just on or, short of the tail, so stick to or round down a size. If you are layering under the rug you may want to think about going up a size.
If all of this seems too hard then check out the handy rug size chart which will give you an estimated size based on the size of your horse.
NOTE: If you are buying a European rug then the measurement is from the top of the withers to the tail and taken in centimetres. We have included this on the images.

What a crazy night! Horses are replaced with space hoppers for the Fitzroy Court Stables 1st Birthday games. It was a fantastic get-to-gether for liveries and their guests, with many talented horse riders finding it impossible to stay seated on their new steads. Watch and enjoy to the end, to see some spectacular performances :-) :-)

Welcome to Autumn! πŸ€—
A season full of glorious colour, rich reds and deep oranges. It's time to be enjoying the bounties of the great outdoors.
We love autumn at Fitzroy Court Stables. Early morning misty rides have the horses on their toes as they sense the change of season and long lazy afternoon rides in the lingering warmth of the sun are the perfect way to end the day.

Great day out at the Petplan Regionals for Sara, Jack and crew from Fitzroy Court Stables. A bit of a sticky start with Jack throwing a shoe but thanks to a local farrier coming to the rescue all went well and they rode a good Medium test. Well done πŸ€—πŸ΄πŸ€©

EAR UP!πŸ‘‚ Understand what your horse is thinking by reading his ears.
- Hanging to the side = just chillin' 😎 - Pricked forward = checking out whats going on πŸ€” - Pinned back flat = get out of my space, not happy 😠... - Moving backwards and forwards = normal, happy πŸ˜€ - Flicking backwards and forwards quickly = nervous 😟 - Drooping = sleepy 😴 - One ear back = listening to you but also alert to the surroundings πŸ™‚

We thought it was only people and dogs that moved their limbs erratically when dreaming but we now have hard evidence that horses, well a horse, does it as well.
Harvey, one of our lovely liveries at Fitzroy Court Stables and a real character on the yard was caught by his mum, Sam, dreaming, whilst having a snooze in his lovely big stable.
We'd love to know what he was dreaming about. Perhaps he was galloping across the field with the wind in his mane and the spring of the soft grass under his feet....What do you think?

SUNBURN OR NOT SUNBURN?πŸ€”πŸŒΏπŸŒž Perhaps your horse is suffering from PHOTOSENSITIVITY from the grass it is eating.
Certain plants (perennial rye, smartweed, burr trefoil, buckwheat and St. John’s wort) and some medications can cause photosensitivity, which looks very similar to sunburn.
... Sunburn is caused by just the sun on skin, photosensitivity is caused by an internal reaction and can be primary or secondary depending on the cause.
Primary photosensitivity is caused when your horse eats certain plants or medications. These are broken down into photodynamic compounds which are released into your horse and react with UV light to cause painful redness, blisters, scaly skin, scabs, open sores and swelling, similar to sunburn, on pink skin.
Secondary photosensitivity is caused by liver damage. When your horse eats certain plants, like buttercup, lantana, bermuda, kale, tarweed, and certain types of clover (there are many other plants as well) his liver may become damaged. A damaged liver is unable to remove the photodynamic compound phylloerythin and the skin can start to react.
Photosensitivity is painful and can take weeks or longer to heal. Evening turn out with days spent inside are the best and when you do turn out in daylight make sure the pink and sensitive areas are well covered with UV protected material.
And no matter how tempting don’t peel any crust or scabs, keep the sores clean and dry to prevent any secondary infection and consult your vet.

BIG THANK YOU to Nicola Cooper Dressage for an amazing clinic at Fitzroy Court Stables today. πŸ™πŸ˜
We were all inspired with Nicola's teaching. There were many eureka moments, lots of sweating (mainly riders) and laughter. It was hard work but we all loved every minute. πŸ˜…
Thankfully we made video's of everyone's lesson so we can remember all of those pearls of wisdom which Nicola gave us.πŸ€”
... To top it all we shared plenty of tea and cake and a lovely tack room lunch with just a little wine... πŸ˜‹
It was a fantastic day and we have all put our names down for the next one - please Nicola 😍

LUSH NEW PADDOCKS at Fitzroy Court Stables 🌱
It was a yard team effort to get the new paddocks fenced and set-up with water last week so our lucky horses could move onto some lovely fresh grazing. Well done everyone!
Like everywhere, this summer has been hard on the fields, but they can now be rested and hopefully with some rain will recover nicely for winter.

FANTASTIC POLE WORK CLINIC at Fitzroy Court Stables last night!
Liveries Sam and Clare not only put their horses Harvey and Aldo but also themselves through the paces, with a fab pole work clinic from Liza of Collective Equestrian. Liza came out to the yard and taught us all some simple and interesting pole exercises. We were exhausted just watching it. Well done ladies and boys. :-)

This is Hands Down The Best Yard I Have Ever Been On. I can get anxious about leaving my animals with anyone, but here I would happily go away on holiday and know Indy would be looked after like royalty. The staff are wonderful and Sara is the only Yard owner I ever want in my life from now on. Facilities 10/10, care 10/10, exercising services 10/10, other liveries 10/10. This is the mythical Great Yard we all wish existed, it’s a Unicorn Yard.

User

I may be biased because I'm already there....but the hacking is wonderful, the yard immaculate and the care Sara gives to her charges is the TOPS. I'm never leaving Sara so you are now officially lumbered with us ;)
