About Flyplymouth

FlyPlymouth plans to reopen Plymouth Airport and safeguard it for the future by putting it into community ownership. In 2012 we led the VIABLE campaign where 38, 000 people signed a petition to safeguard Plymouth Airport. In 2015 our business plan for the airport was part of the evidence that formed the "Plymouth Plan", the strategic planning framework for the development of the city to 2031. We are now working for our goals in 2017, which is a defining year for the airport. 2017 is so critical because during this year there will be an Examination in Public. This is where Plymouth City Council's policy that the airport site has been safeguarded for aviation (airport) use until 2031 will be examined by a planning inspector. If the inspection is successful, the site must be used as an airport, and cannot continue in limbo any longer. If not, it can be sold off as development land for housing and the like. Thus we need to do all we can to ensure the Examination in Public is in favour of the airport. Should we pass the Examination in Public, we hope to reopen the airport for General Aviation in 2018, and scheduled aviation in 2019 with a fleet of 32 seater aircraft serving key routes in the UK and to the continent.
