About For Common Cause, Charity

For Common Cause was a London-based charity that combatted inequality by providing advice, network connections, equipment and coaching from a large coalition of companies and professionals. Donors and volunteers worked with beneficiaries first-hand, both online and in person, to see their impact. For Common Cause identified people on benefits who had completed training and prepared business plans through one of its partners. Through their site, donors and volunteers could browse projects or micro-enterprises to contact them directly to offer support. Supporters could help in a variety of ways: volunteering time or skills via email, phone, or at an event, or donating money or equipment. The charity also hosted business clinics with advice sessions from volunteer professionals. HistoryFor Common Cause was founded by Karen Snow after she worked with DFID and USAID on poverty reduction, civic participation, and public-private partnership programmes. Snow founded the charity after working with communities in South African townships and East London to help them define and drive their own solutions to local challenges. "I saw there were no resources for those at the grassroots to do things for themselves. We have big institutions and governments, but they only offer a partial solution, " said Snow in an interview with Positive News in 2013. As of 2015, For Common Cause had 260 volunteers who supported 150 beneficiaries in the UK. Snow left as Executive Director in 2015, and the charity closed a year after.
