Unarmed vs impact weapon or “Things get real in Hollywood”. Ah, the 1970's... On the set of the “experimental” film Maidstone, an improvised fight scene is about to take place between actors Norman Mailer and Rip Torn. Unfortunately for Mailer, Torn has decided to add unplanned “realism” to the scene by actually striking his co star in the head with a hammer. Method acting goes out the window and before you can say “European realism” the film slides into documentary and the ...fight is really ON. It's a fascinating clip of how people really fight – emotional, biting, clawing, ear ripping, strangling etc and in unexpected situations and contexts. Other people get involved... The stalemate moments where neither person can move and reasoning dialogue starts between the two men only to relapse into more fighting when the hold is released. Neither of these men were unfamiliar with violence in real life, especially Mailer who had incredibly escaped jail in the early 60's for stabbing his then wife in the back and chest, narrowly missing her heart. She survived and had refused to press charges. Huge, indulged egos, histories of violence – perhaps this ad-libbed scene was never a ..."good idea"? At least not without a supervising adult. Ah, the 70's …..80's........90's......and so on. Jeth

Further to our July study topic of counter knife work - police video offering insight for those who underestimate a knife attacker's potential for mayhem. This incident happened 3 days ago. 2 armed police vs an apparently suicidal man (he shouts "Do it" and "shoot me" during the encounter - the so called "suicide by cop") armed with a knife. One person (UK) commented on the video: "He had a knife. They had guns. Why did they shoot to kill? Surely they could have just brought... him down with one shot to the leg as he was advancing. Seven or eight shots seems both excessive and unnecessary". People may not just lie down and/ or stop when shot once , perhaps several times - this man does not- they remain a threat until down. Notice also the ground he covers in such a short time - shades of the classic Dennis Tueller studies from the early 80's. As he attacks the Police officer he is trying to wrest control of the officer's gun before being finally brought down.

These quotes are examples of “Gaslighting”. Gaslighting can happen to anyone and is a form of emotional abuse that’s seen in abusive relationships - the act of manipulating a person by forcing them to question their thoughts, memories and events occurring around them.
This behaviour is used by the abuser to gain control in a relationship or to throw doubt on their own behaviour (eg infidelity, abusiveness etc) if it is discovered. If your judgment is ‘irrational’, you can no... longer be a source of challenge to your abuser.
Gaslighting is domestic abuse, and is recognised as a criminal offence in the UK. Coercive or controlling behaviour towards a partner or family member has been a crime punishable by up to five years in prison since 2015.
Victims of gaslighting can be pushed so far that they question their own sanity, leaving them with damaging, long term after effects such as depression, low self worth, C/PTSD and even ideas of self harm.
The term “Gaslighting” comes from the stage play “Gas Light” (1938) in which a husband sets out to deliberately convince his wife she is insane in order to obtain her family wealth.

Hock writes: After my four-day gig in Belgium last weekend, I 'd sold about 36 wooden, rubber band pistols. I carry them around to use in training and usually don't sell them, unless asked. A police training group, made of several police agencies, whom I taught one day, but members appeared all 4 days, bought me out of all the guns after working the situations I teach. 36 guns...gone. Purchased by police trainers. The irony struck me that in 1995, when I began to use these wo...oden guns, I was laughed at, accused of playing with toys, all by people by the way with rubber guns and fake guns (kinda EXPENSIVE toys themselves)...mine actually shot something about 8 feet in semi-auto fashion. None of the laughers had ever attended one of my sessions, just heard about me and them. And the laughers all had rubber guns to train with too by the way.
I guess it was around 2003 or so, that police and gun folks, in the seminars, started buying them. Starting with two or four guns, for smaller group workouts, I guess also concerned of the stigma. Believe me if I could shoot other grade guns with safe ammo I would, but I was stuck with...
