What can I say, What a find, we've walked past many times and in summer it's queued down the street. Having eaten there yesterday (29th March) we now know why. We ate in although take away is an option, the service was excellent, staff friendly and polite. The food well such value for money we were stuffed with drinks for under £20 mind you we did have the house special, the other really nice thing is that you can have a half portion of chips. Definitely going back.
We love Fred's well worth the drive from Horsham. Best fish and chips in the south. Portions are enormous and staff always friendly and helpful. Sat in for the first time yesterday and they provided a high chair for lo. Excellent service and a good cup of tea too. Would highly recommend.
This is the best fish and chip shop in the south! Always busy, always fresh and always amazing! We never eat fish and chips anywhere else!
This is our usual local chippy so we chose Fred's for our fish lunch on Good Friday. The queue stretched halfway up the street proving how popular it is. Friendly, calm staff and perfectly cooked scampi, cod and haddock. Fresh chips (not frozen) and a pleasure to eat outside on the new riverside steps. Free ketchup and tartare sauce too.
Superb value for money and very tasty.
We pop in every time we’re down for the day
OMG I have been going to this fish and chip shop for years and it is 80 miles away. Me and my hubby finished work and drove all the way just for the best fish and chips in the UK and then drove back. Well worth every mile!!
Not sure if Fred's shop was their 50 yrs ago when as a young man m.2kids 1st wife we would spend all our time at Littlehampton it was always so friendly everywhere in the Town along the beach. We would frequent all fish bars, finding which ones were kid friendly. Those kid's are grown up and have kids of their own. And because their mother and I grew apart she and her new Beau' went to stay down in Cornwall Moi ! Has not been to any Sussex coast. Which I miss so much living up in the London area for past 20 years. So having spent many years in farming away from our South Coast.. I have a yearn to follow my nose too the beach/ And real fish shops with fresh fish, not some wishey blanket that taste of Tripe uncooked.
It's worth sitting in the small cafe area behind the counter - no queuing and prompt friendly service and you can see how big the portions are! Huge!
First visit yesterday. We ate in as it was a bit cold. Both me and my family really enjoyed it. Great food and service. Just a shame we are not local, as I feel we would become regulars to the restaurant.
Fabulous food, friendly staff. The food is consistently yummy. Never covered in grease... food was great, hot and fresh.
Best fish and chips along South coast. We drive 21 miles every Friday to Freds. I am such a fussy eater of fish and chips but can honestly say I have never been disappointed with the food.
Always go here when visiting my mum and dad, girl behind the counter could be a bit friendlier and welcoming though, food is great and nice portions , would recommend to go here for visitors
Service was prompt, even though it was cooked fresh. Had the 4x Mini filets -- boy was I in for a surprise! I was expecting a kids meal portion, but the filers were huge!
Brilliant value, visit it whenever I can.
Freshly cooked cod and chips - brilliant. They were brilliant. Would be 5 star if the garden peas were better (not tinned?).
Clean and good service. Can't ask for more.
Can't wait to go back.
The chips were good and so was the battered sausage, but some staff seemed more interested in there phones. Very poor image for a customer facing job. Ban use of mobile phones immediately. I did this in my shop.
Not the best. We were disappointed in that the fish we bought was less than crispy, and the chips were not properly cooked. The shop was busy at the time however.....
We didn't get to eat anything. After queuing, they suddenly decided to close up shop. When people weren't moving quick enough they shouted "are you deaf?!" and shut the doors on about ten of us waiting in the queue outside. Everyone was abit stunned, and one man said "no need to be so rude!" to the staff inside. To which a teenage girl inside replied "I'm not serving anyone else!". My young children have better social skills than the staff at this place!. This was around three o'clock today. We went to Chipwick in Worthing instead.
Utterly vile, cooked in the southern manner, dry fish, generally reeking of vegetable oil, not a patch on northern fish and chips. The fish should be succulent, the chips firm with a fluffy interior, the mushy peas slightly liquid, Fred's fails on all counts.
I've just been into Fred's and bought 2 medium cod and chips it was disgusting I even questioned the look of the chips when in the shop and the girl told me it was a different potato they were using. They tasted like they had sat there for ages and the oil definitely needed to be changed never again. I'll stick to the one I usually use in sea lane.
